Livorno features one of the biggest harbours in Italy, from which ferries depart towards a long list of Mediterranean destinations, particularly the Tuscan Archipelago, Sardinia and Corsica. Called ‘Ideal Town’ during Renaissance times for its religious tolerance and its advanced trading regulations, it is surrounded by typical Tuscan countryside and Tyrrhenian beaches.
The city was declared a tax-free port in the 1580s, during the rule of Ferdinando de' Medici. The regulation protected the merchants and granted religious tolerance, attracting numerous Jewish and Protestant immigrants. The Counter-Reformation, the Napoleonic invasions, and the loss of its free-port status after the Italian Reunification were at the base of its commercial decline.
Don’t miss the canals of the Venice District, Piazza della Repubblica, and the Fortezza Nuova fortress. The spacious avenues and streets in the city centre contrast with the undulating landscape of its suburban areas. Most hotels in Livorno are located in the central area.
The city is an important centre from which you can explore Tuscany, including Florence, Pisa, Lucca, and the beach resort of Versilia. The local railway station offers regional and national links, while Pisa International Airport is just 22 km away.
Whether you need a hotel near Livorno’s ferry pier or a B&B close to the suburban beaches, don’t miss the accommodation deals on Booking.com!
Livorno is a great base from where to explore Tuscany.
Livorno is a great base from where to explore Tuscany. The Quartiere Venezia, where embassies are, is the nicest place to stay & walk around. There’s an abundance of very good & also some gourmet restaurants. A walk along the seaside is recommended,
Unfortunately there’s some beautiful old historic buildings left to decay, namely the ancient thermal bath house ‚Coralle‘ and the adjacent grand hotel.

Livorno's coastline is picturesque.
Livorno's coastline is picturesque. Terrazza Mascagni is a great place to watch the sunset. The large central market has a vibrant atmosphere. The Piazza Grande is a good place to sit and have a coffee or a meal.
There are many attractions in nearby areas: Pisa, Siena, Lucca.

A great city.
A great city. Kind of dingy and edgy in places. lots of street art. I'd forgotten my favorite artist, Modigliani, was from here. Cuisine livornese is spectacular. Some of the finest seafood I've ever had. The old fortresses and Port area are very romantic. Hope I get to return some day. Loved il Porto Ristopecheria and Osteria della Venezia. Take the Moby Fantasy to Sardegna for a real treat. Getting around town isn't that easy no Uber I didn't understand the bus lines. Great little shopping area I think on what's called Grand Avenue

Livorno is a waterfront town, not BEACHFRONT.
Livorno is a waterfront town, not BEACHFRONT. We were looking for a relaxing day by the sea on a sandy beach, but this is not the city for that. It has beautiful views but the waterfront is rocky, not sandy, in which we were disappointed. It took all morning to figure out that to get to the beach we had to leave the town. $40 in cab fares to go to Tirrenia which is beautiful and sandy. Skip this town, go to Tirrenia instead if you're looking for a traditional sandy beach.

Livorno is a very special artistic and very Italian town to mine point of view. It reminds me of the modern Art which could be with a variety of faces: the dark side of realism as well as the hopeful side of modernism and the fantastically beautiful side of the antic architecture. For swimmers and nature lovers it leads you to the incredibly long and supercool beaches together with nature reservoirs like rocks water areas and so on.. For fashion people Livorno might be special in a variety of flea markets which could be very interesting and unique. There are lots of Art galleries around as well. The restaurants and cafes are also very Italian, with an incredible fish menu ( the freshest fish from the harbor of town ) and reasonable prices.

I like everything in Livorno.
I like everything in Livorno. Beautiful promenade and restaurants locals and bars. I can suggest a better organization for park the car inside all the city center area. The quartier Venezia is well served : restaurants, bars, locals and close to the port area . You can visit the central Market and eat the special food “5e5” in Gagarin place.
The hotel in general is spectacular, it is a 5* hotel and it certainly lives up to its reputation. Andrea was extremely helpful and polite and guided us to the finest restaurant in Livorno, the room was like something out of a movie high ceilings the biggest bed I've personally seen and to top it off the breakfast was sublime a broad selection of Gluten free and hot food selection. To conclude would certainly stay again and recommend this to anyone considering staying.
This is a very nice hotel to spend the night when you’re traveling. We arrived by boat late at night, and the Hotel Max was just a few minutes away from the port. The room and bathroom are comfortable and clean, staff is very friendly and reception is opened 24 hours a day, which is convenient when you’re arriving late.
The hotel is also located near the motorway entrance for an easy continuance of your journey.
Highest recommendation to choose this place from me and my friend.
Really nice small hotel from outside and inside(mini castle), really clean, good location not far away from Livorno center, close to the hotel there is so many nice restaurants with beautiful view.
The staff is really warm and helpful in all situation.
We felt like at home .
The staff is amazingly helpful and treat guests more like the guests of a cozy B&B rather than that of a hotel.
The location is excellent, making it easy for one to reach downtown Livorno, and is also conveniently located to reach the seaside. The bed was a bit older, but I personally prefer spring mattresses so this was very welcome!
The hotel is in a good conservation state! The room is nice and has a beautiful view of the sea!
The beach space is awesome, with a nice bar and really nice structure, we enjoyed it a lot!
We enjoyed the hotel restaurant and had 2 dinners at it, the food was really good and we enjoyed the sunset!
20 minutes easy walk to train station. Easy to main areas of Livorno. Basic kitchen dishes pots and utensils enough to make do. Modern feel for a couple to stay comfortably. Nice balcony (except noise). 15 min train to Pisa and 75 min train to Florence.
We miss the train so didn’t arrive on time for check in. Luckily Jacob was able to do late check. Extra charge. The location is really good, close to bus stop that take you directly to beach and also just a 20 min by walk to the train station
Staff is very friendly, the environment is peaceful, every detail a traveler needs is considered. The common areas are clean and beautiful. The apartment is luxurious. I look forward to visiting one of their other properties on my next Italy.
Friendly host, lovely hotel/house, easy check in, comfortable bed and good size room. Perfect for a one night stay before travelling onwards, Livorno and Livorno Stazione Centrale are both close by bus or by walking.
The Gran Duca is truely a grand old hotel, however the rooms are very comfortable and modern. It is located in the heart of Livorno and was fantastic for our overnight stay. They even gave us a free upgrade!
The hosts were very very polite and explained everything we needed to know and also gave us a lot of good recommendations for our stay in Livorno. The apartment is big and has all you might need!
Very nice owner, really good location, it is a perfect flat. There is always free parking place, public transport and beach nearby.
Also nice place to stay and discover Tuscany from here
Location is in the nice part of Livorno. Close to the ocean walk!
Room was very nice and charming.
We got the room with the balcony and loved looking out at the sky.
Lovely, kind and accommodating staff -- good breakfast for Italy -- beautifully appointed and spacious room. Spotlessly clean, great shower and towels, comfy pillows.
The location is the best. In the middle of the old town and next to the best parking garage in Livorno
