FAQs about hotels in San Gimignano

A Tempting Tuscan Sun

San Gimignano, with the Italian sun glistening intently on its 14 remaining towers, cuts a dramatic figure from its position high on a Tuscan hill overlooking vineyards. However, it is when you get up-close-and-personal with this medieval-walled city and crane your neck to the blue sky that you truly appreciate its mesmerising beauty.

If you take away the swarming summer tourists circling the piazzas of San Gimignano, then this city offers you a wonderful trip back in time. The main square, Piazza della Cisterna, is surrounded by Romanesque buildings and Piazza del Duomo features Torre Grossa, the city’s tallest tower.

San Gimignano, originally an Entruscan village, was part of the ancient pilgrim route Via Francigena joining France to Rome. Its name was derived from the Bishop of Modena and is well known today as the Town of Fine Towers.

The 12th-century Collegiate Church of San Gimignano is a worth a visit with its wonderful collection of frescoes, and it also includes the Religious Art Museum.

Whether it is sitting on a restaurant terrace sipping some local Vernaccia wine or attending the lively Thursday Market, Booking.com has a range of San Gimignano hotels, guest houses and apartments for your stay. And just out of the city are options such as farm stays and country houses in the Tuscan countryside.

A trip to Tuscany must include San Gimignano!

A trip to Tuscany must include San Gimignano! Highly recommend for its medieval charm, spectacular views and delicious food. It really feels like stepping back in time. It’s not public transport accessible and if you have limited time, hiring a car is the best way to go. Ample public parking is available as well. We visited around late October so it wasn’t too busy compared to summer time and the weather was perfectly warm during the day and mild around dinner time. Light jacket only. It’s a photographer’s delight as there’s always a scenic opportunity as we turn a corner. From SG we drove to Siena, another stunning city close by and not to miss! For lunch we were lucky enough to stumble upon a small multi-Routard recommended resto and it seriously did not disappoint. It’s called Osteria Nonna Gina di Lella e Dado. Some of the best pasta we’ve had in Emilia Romagna is here. Also don’t miss the gelato at Gelateria Dondoli, they’ve won multiple awards and offer unique gelato flavours you really have to try.

If you’re in Tuscany, you have to visit San Giminiano.

If you’re in Tuscany, you have to visit San Giminiano. The city centre has a very special architecture and a lot of small shops and wineries. It’s the perfect place to spend a few days with your spouse. We had a wine tasting at Marronaia Winery, close to the city and we enjoyed it, but next time I would also try another winery, like Tenuta Torciano, which we tried a few months earlier. We ate a fantastic meal at ristorante Fuoriluogo, which I recommend strongly. I recommend staying as close as possible to the city, it’s a nice feeling that you can walk while admiring the sights.

I can't describe it, you have to be there, you have to see this miracle. I recommend parking lots number 3 and 4, there is always space, the price is reasonable and you only have to walk for a few minutes, and there is also an elevator.

It is one of the most unique destinations in all of Europe.

It is one of the most unique destinations in all of Europe. San Gimignano is a must-visit when in Tuscany. Its medieval appearance whisks you back in time and one can easily transform the tourists to locals bringing their food to market. High-quality restaurants and a world-champion gelateria, what is not to fall in love with. Leave your healed shoes at home and wear comfortable footwear as the streets, side streets and shops are far from smooth, but this is just part of the experience

We stayed in late September, the weather was amazing and the city not to crowded. I would fully recommend staying in the exceptional hill top town which in the evenings as the crowds go home is the perfect place to eat and relax.

You can explore the Torre Grossa and a couple of other sites with one pass, there's excellent pasta (you will smell the ragù while you explore in the afternoon!) and aperitivi for just a few euros, plenty of places to cool off with gelato, and the view over Tuscany from the Torre and the Rocca are spectacular. The town in miniature is also worth your time. And be sure to have a glass of Vernaccia, the local white wine!

This is one of the most stunning places I have ever been to in my entire life. The views leave you speechless. Serena is kind, informative, and friendly. The apartment is beautifully rustic, warm, and comfortable. The pool is impeccable and much needed on a warm day. The fauna and flora just add to the beauty of the countryside. Conveniently located within 10 minutes of the supermarket and restaurants. You will regret not staying at this beautiful Italian Castle. I would come back to Italy just to stay here! ❤️❤️❤️

Anitca Dimora offers a perfect retreat near San Gimignano, boasting stunning views and proximity to the town. Our stay in the Corte - full suite was delightful; the rooms were spacious, impeccably clean. Despite our late arrival, the staff were responsive and welcoming. A complimentary breakfast basket (usually not included) on check-out day was a lovely touch. If you're exploring Tuscany, Antica Dimora is the ultimate choice. Very close to most of historic towns and wineries. Highly recommended without a doubt.

Beautiful place. Nice design, comfortable room with most necessary appliances. Bathroom was good too. Great access to San gimignano - with the transport provided. And from the balony you can see the towers of the town. Sunset is unforgettable. Nice pools but on the another lot across the road at the hotel sovestro area. Very helpful and accomodating staff, even with unusual requests. We are thankful for making this stay as romantic as possible. .

Big room, quiet and one of the best views we’ve ever had from a hotel room. Perfect view of the San Gimignano skyline with the vineyards in the foreground. Unforgettable. Breakfast and dinner excellent too especially with the Mormoraia wine! Staff very friendly and helpful. Something as simple as bring your bags to your room and parking your car for you goes such a long way after a long journey. Grazie Mile!

Amazing property! The photos don’t do it justice. Historic building, high wood beam ceilings, but all updated to modern standards. All while staying down to earth. The host was extremely welcoming, flexible and nice :) Even some snacks and drinks available in the room at cost. A fantastic place in San Gimignano if you are looking for authentic over luxury - but still pretty luxurious!

beautiful …but the owners are somewhat unhelpful and annoyed by guests. they are hospitable but only if you do as they wanted. for example we came in after dinner at about 11 and when we buzzed for them to open the gate they were annoyed. in Italy finishing dinner at 11is very normal. they want you to check out by 10am too and will not watch your bags etc.
