Ferrara was a haven for the arts during the Renaissance and much of this is still evident today. The powerful Este family held court in the multi-turreted Estense Castle, protected by a moat and drawbridge, and they were illustrious patrons of artists and authors.
Bellini, Piero della Francesca and Titian all perfected their strokes here, and the university houses parts of Ludovico Ariosto’s original manuscript of his epic poem – Orlando Furioso – containing allegorical references to his sponsors. The family is also depicted in Palazzo Schifanoia’s detailed fresoces, and the Palazzo dei Diamanti gallery displays works commissioned from the School of Ferrara.
Some Este tombs are in Corpus Domini Monastery and another is in the ornate cathedral whose three-gabled façade overlooks the crenellated town hall. Both line Piazza di Trento e Trieste, the main square where locals come to socialise. Another popular square is green Piazza Ariostea.
The Este strengthened their position through marriage alliances with the influential Borgia, Medici and Gonzaga families, but they didn’t have it all their own way. Ferrara’s well-preserved city walls were built for defence, and ardent opponent of the Renaissance, Savonarola, was born in this UNESCO World Heritage city.
Surrounding cobbled streets house many luxury Ferrara hotels, cheap apartments and B&Bs near the train station, available on Booking.com.

An old walled town with an amazing Castle and a great art gallery (on a par with Bologna). A day trip to Comacchio and Ravenna is about 200km and well worth taking the time to see the Po Estuary and the Ravenna mosaics. I hired a car from Morini for Euro 45 and 15 for fuel. Hire a bike and view the palaces and museums as well as ride around the outside of the town walls.

We spent 2 days and nights in Ferrara and it was a rewarding visit. If you are going to stay in Ferrara, we highly recommend Triquetra - rooms for rent for location, value, cleanliness, comfort, the "coffee room" and especially the host Antonino. The town has numerous sites & museums which are almost all included in the MyFerrara pass which, for 22 euro a person for 3 days and 2 nights, also covers your city tax of 1.5 euro p.p. a day (after a little paperwork at the B&B). The medieval streets of the old town are interesting to wander in - they have a very 'real' feel. Sightseeing highlights are climbing the Lions Tower in the Castle, the Palazzo Schifanoia, Casa Romei and the Archaeological Museum. Also the small Cathedral museum for it's collection of scribed and illuminated texts. Unfortunately the cathedral is under heavy renovation at the moment so it's difficult to see much. For dinner, you must try Osteria I Quattro Angeli on the square behind the castle - get the lamb chops (if you eat lamb chops)...amazing. Also, very nice service staff.

While definitely secondary to to the larger cities of Bologna and Verona (the two main cities on my itinerary), Ferrara is also worth visiting for a day or so. (I can't compare it to Parma or other similar-sized cities in the vicinity unfortunately.)
It has an attractive historical centre that's nice to walk around. The main attraction is the castle, which is a museum, but there are other worthwhile museums in the city. Particularly Palazzo Schifanoia, with its impressive frescos. And the long alleys of the old Jewish quarter were interesting.
From the moment we arrived it was comfort at its best. Tastefully decorated A lovely easy check in, great communication. Comfy beds and best shower in Italy, we had travelled a lot in 3 weeks. A 20 min walk into city center where they was lots of places to choose to eat at. Breakfast was the best homemade pastries and fantastic
scrambled eggs. Very close to the station too. Would stay here again as Farrera has more to explore. Thank you Angelo & Cal. Ps thank you so much for the pastries you gave us for our travels. Grazie Mille
We loved everything about the Hotel Orologico! It is quite quirky with an eclectic mix of 'artefacts'dotted about, creating a unique atmosphere, The staff were outstandingly helpful during our 4 day stay. The breakfast is generous and excellent. Bed super-comfortable . We used the downstairs garage which has limited space but we think worth requesting. You can borrow a bicycle, and Ferrara is very cycle-friendly. There is a useful supermarket almost next -door. Strongly recommended!
I wasn't planning a stay in Ferrara, but I was towed to the town after my car broke down. This was the closest hotel to where I was left by the tow truck, so booked in.
The staff were amazing. Really helpful and way more help than my insurance company!
The room was comfortable and the breakfast great.
I have a pretty low opinion of Italian hotels, but this one is really good, especially for the money.
Location was amazing, just a few minutes walk to Este Castle and town center. We stayed in the Anex room (family of 4) and the room was very spacious, had a kitchen (no oven) but we'll equipped with new pots and pans, cutlery etc. bathroom was huge and great shower. Breakfast was also superb with homemade cakes and biscuits. We really loved our stay at Hotel de Prati and would highly recommend it.
Hotel is great. It is a walking distance from Ferrara centre. We were staying here on our way to Rome with our two year old baby girl and enjoyed it. It has a garden in the middle where we also had breakfast beacuse it was the end of May and warm enough. Breakfast is great very rich and planty to choose from. Our room was on the ground floor so we also had a terrace. Our kid enjoyed it.
Breakfast was bit basic (as it tends to be in Italy) but completely satisfactory and the fresh croissants hot from oven delicious :-)
Room (we had nr 4 at highest floor) was very spacious and comfortable and there was quite silent.
Personel (specially the gentleman in reception) was very friendly and helpfull.
The location was perfect for us, just 5-10 min walk to citycenter.
Nice size room, very friendly and helpful staff, right across from castle and moat, very nice breakfast, very close and easy walk to restaurants, sights, and shops. Street parking was close by, and only cost 5 euros/day. We were able to drive into the area in front of the hotel to unload and load our bags. Great communication and directions.
Absolutely everything was flawless.
The room, bathroom, and all areas were impeccably clean. The bed was exceptionally comfortable. The hotel's proximity to the train station and its not-so-distant location from Ferrara center were extremely convenient. Furthermore, having a supermarket right across from the hotel was a huge plus.
This hotel is a great value. It is located in the center of Ferrara and at walk distance to all the main monuments, restaurants and cafes of this beautiful town. The hotel has 3 parking options but it is important to reserve your spot especially in the summer. Our room was spacious and very clean.
It is located near the castello at ferrara at a central location in a back neighborhood which was really quiet. Room was big and bed was comfortable. Bathroom was good. Breakfast was excellent, Staff were really friendly and helpful. One of the best hotels ive stayed in Italy
Best place You can get in Ferrara nearby. You have Your own flat, and owners are the most kind people I've met in Italy! Rooms are big, nice bathroom and fully functional kitchen. If You want to feel like you never left your lovely home that's the place!
A small charming guest house hotel. Super friendly owner and staff. Prime location in a very under the radar city. Btw great AC too.
I am a born and raised New Yorker so I can be picky but this place checks all the boxes .
Very nice little apartment designed with the taste.Extremelly easy chek-in and chek-out.Just few minutes from the city center, on foot. And big free parking near!
And the amazing Ferrara around the corner.
The hotel is conveniently located near the train station, but it takes about 15 minutes to walk to the center. The bed is very comfortable, the room has a safe, fridge and kettle.
The hotel is located right in the heart of Ferrara, the personnel is friendly and helpful. The breakfast had many varieties to choose and all were delicious.
