Olbia is all about the sea, and what a glorious turquoise sea it is. As the gateway to Sardinia’s stunning Emerald Coast, this down-to-earth town is often overlooked in favour of the more glamorous resorts. However, it does have attractions of its own.
The simple Basilica of San Simplicio dates to the 11th century and the Church of St Paul the Apostle is also medieval. The National Archaeology Museum houses Roman ships, as well as prehistoric artefacts from the surrounding area.
Sardinia has a wealth of prehistoric structures and one of these – the Tomba dei Giganti Su Monte‘e S’Abe – is near Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport and medieval Pedres Castle. Across the bay is Sa Testa Sacred Well, dating to at least 1200 BC.
Along the coast in Pittulongu are the real attractions – fantastic, unspoilt beaches from where you can see rocky Tavolara Island, a popular diving site. In summer, boats sail there from Isola Bianca Harbour, the arrival point of ferries from the Italian mainland. The harbour’s fishing boats are responsible for the fantastic mussels in Olbia’s seafood restaurants, some of which are amid bars and shops on Corso Umberto – the locals’ favourite passeggiata spot.
The Olbia accommodation on Booking.com includes luxury spa hotels, apartments near the beach and cheap B&Bs.

Olbia is a practical town to stay in because you can travel by bus or car to Sardinia’s top attractions. There is a lot of action on the Corso Umberto and surroundings but overall I found only a few good places to eat. The airport is close and easy to reach via public transportation. All in all I would recommend it as a place where you spend the night but you plan your day to day visiting the amazing beaches and hikes.

If you are travelling around northern Sardinia then I would recommend a visit to Alghero rather than Olbia.
There are very few places of interest in Olbia and the traffic network is very hard to negotiate with confusing signage in many parts.

A trip to Olbia felt like visiting the 'real' Italy.
A trip to Olbia felt like visiting the 'real' Italy. Tourists per se are not specially catered for, although there are tours of La Maddalena from Palau, dolphin spotting etc.
But what you do get is a warm welcome from local people.
Lively bars, but not thumping clubs.
- and the food is amazing, with a particular focus on local delicacies as well as fresh fish and seafood.
Easy to get to local beaches (Bados and Pittulongu) which have beach bars. plenty of loungers and parasols to hire for the day. Turquoise waters, sandy beaches.

Nice Centro and waterfront.
Nice Centro and waterfront. Seemed authentic and residential city. Only stayed one evening, but seemed some good restaurants and pleasant to walk around. Although pleasant, was better for transit spot than base and we were glad that we had stayed in another location for additional travel in the area. NOTE: taxis are difficult to come by and did not answer phone on a Monday morning although we were informed they would by a driver. Be sure to schedule ahead if needed.
- The location is fantastic for a relaxing weekend with a couple or family. It is situated 20 minutes from Porto Rotondo and very well connected to most highlights on the Costa Smeralda.
- Our room was spacious, with high ceiling and large bathroom. It had a back opening onto a nice garden, perfect for relaxing after a long day at the beach.
- We have not tried the restaurant, but noticed that it had several guests every night, so we assume it is a good place to enjoy a typical Sardinian dinner.
It’s a very lovely little hotel. The location is perfect. Very much central but still very calm because it is in one of the little streets next to the main street. The owner Alessandra is a wonderful host and she welcomes you with her arms wide open. She prepares lovely breakfast in the morning and give you the best tips about the city. It’s super clean, we enjoyed it so much and if we come back to Olbia then definitely we’ll stay again in charming “la casa del pitorre”.
The apartment is a great value for money. very well equipped. Superb location. it is walkable distance to Olbia old town and also a convenient starting point to explore Sardegna and various beaches, as you can quickly reach the highways avoiding city traffic. you can reach beaches north or south of Olbia in 20-30 minutes. Parking free of charge outside of the building. Good WiFi in the apartment. Stefano responsive to any questions. Highly recommended!
Lovely place. Clean and nicely furnished. The hosts provided us with all necessary things. The view from the kitchen window and the terrace is stunning! Also nice beaches are nearby, some within the walking distance from the property . Also we found handy that bus stop is very close and there is bus that goes to Olbia. Also thanks to Bernardo and Mara for the hospitality and good advices. Hopefully we can come there next year.
Piero was very kind and offered us his apartment for one night before our flight home. It is located 15 min walk from Airport and also 8 min by local Bus from nice nearby beach. You can find a mini supermarket and a few Pizzerias around. Also a few local bars and cafes. It is a best place to stay for overnight before leaving Sardinia or even for longer period due to close proximity to Tavolara, Olbia and so beautiful beaches.
This hotel has lovely charm and is perfect if you want a nice base to explore the island. the staff were lovely, and the little welcoming touches were great, beach bag and towels, water in the room, room service exceptional. it’s a little out of the town but that’s great if you want a quiet and peaceful place to stay. breakfast has great options and the view from the pool is lovely. free parking big bonus for us.
Lovely friendly staff with helpful recommendations. Having the free parking is definitely a bonus in Olbia. Very relaxing experience and felt you could duck in and out of the old town and out of the heat to the hotel as it was so close to everything. Great bars and restaurants around, felt the standard generally in Olbia was very good when compared to Alghero.
Room, view, staff - everything about this place was good. The first picture at Booking.com, which are representing the hotel - are not good enough, this place deserve a professional photograph to take pictures showing all the the good details on this hotel. Within 15 min you can reach serval of the beautiful beaches.
Hosts were wonderful, so friendly and helpful, the room was spotlessly clean, the bed was so comfortable, fantastic shower , brilliant tea & coffee facilities, functional and the breakfast was very generous! 5 minute walk to beach, location was perfect! Less than 20 minute drive to the Airport.
Great location for going to the beach. Supermarked a few minutes walk away, and several restaurants nearby to choose from. Friendly and helpful staff at the hotel. Nice atmosphere all together. Lots to choose from at the breakfast. The city (Olbia) is also easy accessible by bus or car.
Jazz hotel is the perfect gate-way to Sardenia as it within walking distance from Olbia airport. We have now been at Jazz hotel several times, it really is the perfect start for a wonderful vacation in Sardenia and we surely feel at home immediately when coming to Jazz hotel.
Such an awesome amazing apartment with everything equipped, better than a 4 star hotel I ever lived, just comfortable like my home! And the owner is also an extremely nice person, provided us lots of additional help. The accommodation is more delightful than the beach, haha.
The room and bathroom were very clean! The hotel is also centrally located and super close to the bus stop that you would need to reach the airport and the beach. Everything else is in walking distance. The B&B staff was amazing and I have zero complaints.
We liked the location, near to city centre ( 5-10 min by car ), rooms were basic, but clean. Good to visit near by beaches and Olbia town. Staff is polite and helpful. It is a good choice when passing thru Olbia.
It had everything you need for a relaxing week by the sea.
The beach was so close with sunbeds allocated to the hotel and cafes nearby selling pizza and sandwiches in the day.
The location of the hotel is a walking distance to the airport. Very convenient. The room is clean. The balcony is excellent with sunlight in the afternoon. Breakfast is good.
