Property info

We bought the Richardshús (Build 1938) 1. of December 2016 . We moved in 1. of February 2017 and started to renovate the rooms and the house inside. A lot of regulations had to fulfill like fireproof walls and doors. We put a lot of efforts to make the house as a home not a hotel. A sheared kitchen was a must and has been used for breakfast and dinner. From the start we had 3 bathrooms, one private and two sheared. Now is also the third bathroom ready on the same floor as 4 rooms for 8 people to shear. We try to decorate the rooms moderately with things and colors and our guests seems to like it. We have a very good mountain and see view from all the rooms and from our dining room guest can see whales. The hot tub is very popular and from there our guests have seen northern lights. Our place is between mountains and near the see perfect place to stay for mountain skiers that is very fast growing winter sport in Iceland. Our garden is very big and is the next project to make it nice with flowers trees and a fishpond. The house is going to bee painted outside later but we try to do all the work ourselves. To make a good guest house you need to have a lot of imagination and patience.

Neighborhood info

Hjalteyri, our fishing villages has a history as a big industry villages when Iceland's only export was fish and manly herring. The herring was salted in barrels and exported to many countries where it was proceeded in different ways. In Hjalteyri was a biggest herring factory in Europe built 1937. It melted herring and produced meal and oil until 1966. From Hjalteyri can travelers go to many popular places in Northern Iceland like Mývatn, Námaskarð, Akureyri, Dalvík, Hrísey, Grímsey, Siglufjörður, Hofsós in few hours and in day tours. In the vicinity they can go hiking, skiing, mountain skiing, whale watching, bird watching, fishing, beer bathing in Árskógssandur and the popular Mývatn bath. To Laugafell you can go with 4x4 cars, there is a natural pool. Goðafoss, Dettifoss, Ásbyrgi is also possible for early birds. Swimming pools are in most villages in Iceland. The nearest one is 14 min. from here. New popular pool is in Hofsós. Eyjafjörður is surrounded by mountains very popular by mountain skiers. During summer season is whale watching from Hjalteyri. We have also a diving center. Artcenter Verksmiðjan and restaurant. Horse riding, kayaking and golf can betaken care of.
