Nowadays known as the capital of the Greek island of Crete, Heraklion was once the centre of the Minoan civilisation and the port of the ancient Knossos. This stunning gem features rich history, outdoor markets and important archaeological sites.
Just 6 km from the lively Heraklion is the world-renown ruins of the Knossos palace, where according to the Greek mythology Daedalus built a labyrinth to hold the Minotaur.
Home to the 16th-century church of Agia Ekaterini, the cathedral of St. Minas, Venetian Loggia and the Archaeological Museum, this destination is much more than just a cosmopolitan city with vibrant nightlife. Do not forget to wander around the old port or visit the Venetian Walls.
Beach lovers can discover some of the most popular places of Crete like the tourist resorts of Malia and Hersonissos, the golden beach of Amoudara and the fishing village of Agia Pelagia.
The international airport of Heraklion, Nikos Kazantzakis, is the largest one in the island and the second busiest in Greece. Situated about 4 km from the city centre, it offers seasonal flights to Vienna, Barcelona, Zurich and St. Petersburg. Booking.com offers a great variety of hotels in Heraklion.

Seeing the Palace of Knossos and then the Archeology Museum was a highlight! So much history and so interesting. This is where the Minotaur lived and the site of the Labyrinth, as well as the pre-Greek ancient Minoans. On top of this, inside the Venetian walls are a maze of fun streets with shops and restaurants, all walkable. Good food and fun. So very much worth going to Heraklion! Plus an easy peasy airport is very close nearby.

Heraklio is a city that contrives to hide its treasures.
Heraklio is a city that contrives to hide its treasures. At first, we were a little put off by the mix of architecture and the labyrinthine streets and alleys, but after a while, it all became known and comfortable. The museums are very good: the Archeo. obviously, but the Museum of Cretan History is lovely and has a pleasant terrace to enjoy coffee. The standout museum for us was the Kotsanas Museum of Ancient Greek Technology, which is thoughtfully curated and with kind and friendly staff.

I love Heraklion - I have visited many times and will continue doing so. There’s always something I wish I had more time to visit. During the day there’s so many nearby beaches to spend the day or historical sights to visit. There’s always great venues at night, countless clubs and bars and the restaurants are amazing, even just taking a stroll through the streets is fun.
Heraklion Museum, Knossos and a walk to the port is a must for every visitor!

Knossos was wonderful.
Knossos was wonderful. The boutique Georgia's Garden Hotel north of town where we stayed 3 nights was sweet. A day around Heraklion is nice. We'd like to spend at least a week going around the rest of Crete, and regate that we didn't get far from Heraklion

Heraklion was a city that has been built a lot around the tourism industry. So if you are looking for a more genuine side of Crete i suggest you visit one of the other cities and even better the small villages. The food scene however is incredible with great flavors and innovative ways to introduce the cretan cuisine to a more modern setting. Also there are some interesting museums such as the natural history one and the museum of ancient technology

Heraklio gets a bit of an unnecessary bad rap.
Heraklio gets a bit of an unnecessary bad rap. Sure, it's a port town, but it's also charming with lovely people working in the tourist/non-tourist parts of town. I'd happily return for good food and the lovely atmosphere. My family much preferred walking around Heraklio to Knossos.
We ate at Phyllo Sophies and Ipocampus twice. Great desserts and great meals. Highly, highly recommend getting bougatsa and loukoumades at Phyllo Sophies!
The position is a perfect compromise for visiting the Cnosso palace ( 7 minutes by car) and Agia pelagia beach ( just 30 minutes for an amazing water in a close by town). The room is clean and traditional. The true gem of the hotel is the hospitality. Katerina ( the receptionist) has been an impeccable and outstanding host, she gave us a lot of useful and practice tips to plan our trip(where to go on the beach, where to buy essential stuff, where to eat tipical Creta food). We felt very welcome and spoiled. Highly recommended.
An absolute gem at Heraklion centre. I have visited almost every hotel at Heraklion for business purposes mostly but this is the first time i get so excited! Everything here is designed for the guests shake, with style and comfort. I loved the bed and the pillows the wallpapers too...great job on the breakfast box too that i added upon arrival ( quite enormous for me but i took it with me when leaving hotel). + Booked me a dinner table at a great fish restaurant near hotel with discount!
I loved everything about this hotel, it was the last stop on our trip through Crete and it was the most beautiful room we stayed in by far (even better than in a 5 star resort). Such a well designed room, every little detail was thought of, everything worked perfectly and was very comfortable. The staff was very kind and helped us with calling taxis and recommending places to go to. Location was great as well, close enough to the centre but still quiet at night.
The location is very good. Near to restaurants, shops, pharmacy and bus station. The hotel is modern, clean and the bed is very comfortable. Also, you have a security box on the room. The breakfast was generous and you have several options from salty to sweets. Before booking here, I've read other customer reviews, and I don't understand the bad reviews. I highly recommend Olive Green Hotel! the receptionist were very helpful and friendly! 🙂
great location! Walkable from ferry port for most, though definitely have wheeled luggage. It's not far away, but a healthy 15 minute walk. Really enjoyed the morning view of the ferry/container port. Crete mountains as a backdrop as well and a small island off the coast. Friendly staff and a simple, but quality breakfast. Really enjoyed the balcony! The room is simple, but very spacious. The balcony and grand view make it even larger!
We love this hotel. It is so convenient for the airport, yet in a quiet area, with easy parking.
This was our second stay here. We used it as a start and end point for our two-week tour all over Crete and we were more than happy to be returning for our last two nights before flying home.
Everything was super comfortable, spotless and stylish, and the Batoo Cafe was excellent.
We felt really cared for by all the staff. Thank you!
Great location near airport, very helpful staff, good comfortable bed and nice room. Good breakfast.
Excellent cleaning, fresh towels daily.
Own balcony with chairs and a table
All and all, everything put together, a nice place to stay near airport, bus routes (300 m), a cafe, restaurants and a small corner store with drinks & snacks. Everything we needed was close by.
Electric sockets near BOTH sides of the bed! Very good!
People at the reception were really friendly, they made a reservation for us in some good restaurants. It's hard to park on the street, also we got a recommendation for a parking (8e per day w/ multiple entries). Hotel is at the good location, close to the city centre. Also, hotel has a webpage with recommendations for food/beaches/bars to visit.
The staff were friendly and helpful, the bed was really comfortable and the decor was great. It only opened this year and everything was pristine. A 15 minute walk from the city centre, with good coffee shops a restaurants near by. The hotel parking was a blessing
I liked the location, the staff and the breakfast. It is located very close to the city centre, the staff was very friendly and accommodating and breakfast was very good. There was no parking, but some private parking spots near the hotel made me a special offer.
It was a last minute reservation in Crete. The lady “sorry I forgot her name” waited until we arrived late night and made sure we got everything we need.
It’s amazing when the hosts show care to their residents.
The rooms are spacious. The style was also special
The property is very close to the port. We stayed there the night before we left Crete because our boat was leaving early in the morning. It is conveniently located for going to the port. Also, it looks as if it has recently been remodeled.
i stayed a few days in Iraklion. I had a room on with a sea view. Staff very courteous. Parking was available which was very convenient. Hotel was witin walking distance to all sights. A very good value.
Perfect location. Small walk to the city centre and near the Port parking which was only €3,- per day. Nice museum in the street near hotel. Breakfast on the 6th floor with viewings on to the venetion fort.
The room was clean, spacy with nice view.
The breakfast was excellent and the staff were all nice.
We will go back for sure and I will recommend the people who would go Cretes for sure.
Location great! Parking easy! Staff was very friendly and helpful! Breakfast was great! We will be staying there again after a bit of travel on Crete... Good value.
This was a conclusion to a long vacation in Crete. The facilities cleanliness and location to the airport was perfect. Absolutely nothing to complain about or change.
