Featuring half-timbered buildings, almost complete city walls and a wealth of Roman heritage, beautiful Chester sits by the border with Wales.
The southernmost gate of the walls overlooks the River Dee, and the road leading north is one of 4 in the city to follow the original Roman roads. To the east, the Roman Gardens include a reconstructed underfloor heating system.
Nearby Grosvenor Park has remains of a stone Roman amphitheatre, thought to have been built on the world’s largest wooden amphitheatre at the time. Over the river in the suburb of Handbridge is a 2nd-century shrine to Minerva, and an informative display in the Grosvenor Museum provides the background to all this heritage.
In the west is Chester Racecourse and nearby are the medieval castle remains. More medieval buildings line the cobbled city centre streets. Some of these are The Rows, black-and-white timbered buildings housing 2 levels of shops. Other shopping options are the indoor market by the cathedral, and the Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village in Ellesmere Port to the north. The road out there passes Chester Zoo, one of the UK’s best zoos.
Booking.com’s range of Chester accommodation includes hotels with swimming pools, guest houses by the train station and B&Bs with parking near Chester Airport.
Full of history a wonderful city. Fantastic shops and Boodles next door. Ladies drool looking in their windows.
If fit enough do not miss the walk up above that circles the city, the view looking down is wonderful.

Love the historical aspect of Chester and how it blends with today's culture, how you can get downstairs from an ancient Roman brick wall and straight into a pub or cafe. Love the Cathedral and the guided tours of the Cathedral, the monastery and the Tower!

So much to see and visit, for free.
So much to see and visit, for free. Walking down the canal path to town, up to the Roman city walls, to the river. River boat cruises. Grosvenor Park, where Squirrels and Pigeons eat nuts from your hand. Beautiful St John The Baptist Church, with refreshments, gift shop, lovely staff, we chatted for a long time. Amphitheatre. Cathedral. So many eateries. Museum. Gorgeous black and white buildings everywhere, amazing views, information on the history of Chester all over town.

Chester is a great city to visit for a long weekend.
Chester is a great city to visit for a long weekend. Lots to see and do and a fantastic tourist information centre. Don't miss the themed guided tours: The Tudors/Stuarts, The Women of Chester, Medieval Tour, Roman Tour etc. Excellent value. Walk the walls and enjoy the cathedral too.
Comfortable & spacious rooms. Welcoming and friendly staff. Freshly cooked breakfasts and a good evening menu too.
Free car parking and a local bus stop outside the hotel to get into Chester City centre which is about 4 mins away, if you fancy walking it's roughly 10/12 minutes with Chester train station is about 6 mins walk away.
Hoole high street opposite the lodge has various independent shops and retailers with a friendly atmosphere.
We love how close the hotel is to the centre of Chester. The staff were always kind and on hand to help with any questions we had. The swimming pool and gym were both fantastic. The whole hotel is very clean and tidy and we felt very comfortable staying here especially now the lock down has eased. We highly rate The Mill for families. Thank you to the staff for making our stay so comfortable :)
Lovely hotel in a good location, close to the centre of Chester. The rooms were beautifully decorated and well appointed. We appreciated being able to share a twin room with our 2 children, rather than having to book 2 separate rooms. Breakfast was excellent with a good choice of continental options plus a hot dish off the menu.
A very nice and comfortable hotel - perfect for visiting Chester. We were able to park in their underground parking and then walk into the city centre (5 - 10 minutes away). Our room was very comfortable with a lovely view across Chester racecourse. Friendly welcome and helpful staff. An excellent breakfast.
Love the building. Was built a long time ago but still well looked after. Very short walk to main street. Staff are friendly and any issue you have is dealt with as fast as they can. If your an ale drinker this will be right up your street as have a micro brewery in cellar and supply the hotel exclusively.
The room was good value, we booked a executive room, which was quite large. The room was clean and tidy, breakfast was also included which was lovely.
Chester is a great place to visit and the hotel is right in the city centre. Would stay here again
The facilities at the hotel were excellent with the Spa and gym and swimming pool. The location is also good, a very short drive out of Chester City Centre. The rooms were quite spacious and the staff were willing even if they couldn't help.
The hotel has a fantastic location in the center core of Chester. It's on a busy street, yet the rooms are virtually silent, with great soundproofing. Also the air conditioning worked wonderfully as we were there in a heat wave.
The hotel was located in close proximity to Chester city centre which was ideal for what we wanted. Most staff were joyous and very helpful but I reiterate, most!
The breakfast was good and there was a good choice available.
Hotel is modern, with a relaxing, chilled vibe. Lucky enough to have a canal side room. Access to Chester City centre is literally a 5 minute walk along the canal. Reception/bar staff were all very helpful and friendly.
Staff were fab, friendly, courteous, nothing was too much trouble.
Evening meal and breakfast were very tasty.
All areas of interest were well within walking distance of the hotel as it is central Chester.
Great location for us, very comfortable and clean rooms, some brilliant design touches throughout the property and the outside space is excellent.
It is our go to venue when we visit Chester.
Nice and trendy hotel. Minimalistic and stylish! 15 mins walk to city, 7 mins to train station, by the canal and had handy Waitrose next door and great pub. Clean, new and well located.
The hotel is in a good position to get into Chester City Centre and it's amenities.
Staff were very welcoming and professional.
The room was clean and the bed was clean and comply.
