I asked the owners where I could eat on one of the evenings as the restaurant is closed for some nights. They told me I’d probably have to go to the nearest large town, when there were actually places I could eat locally. The staff were nice, and friendly.

Quiet yet convenient location. A real home from home. Do visit the local farm shop a short walk away. Excellent produce and service.
Ottery St Mary has supermarket shopping, choice of pubs and takeaways etc.
Very convenient for visiting loads of places further afield. Sidmouth is a lovely resort and town; well worth a visit. Plenty of National Trust properties in the area too.

/This small town was a new experience for us even though we live less than 40 miles away. The town center is very attractive with a few must visit sites: the amazing church (a smaller replica of Exeter Cathedral), with a volunteer guide to show you around; also a lovely little museum in the old town hall. This small town has quite a history involving Cromwell and the Civil War. Cromwell used the church as stabling for his army's horses, and Fenny Bridge where the royalists were defeated is not far away.
We were attending the Sidmouth Folk Festival so ate twice at our favorite Neil's, and once at Cricket Club.

Ottery St Mary has plenty of ancient buildings & history.
Ottery St Mary has plenty of ancient buildings & history. which is fascinating.
Sadly it is rather run down & needs some TLC. What was encouraging there are a lot of small businesses.
The main shopping area needs to maintain its old world character, not modernised.

The hotel has character. The location is by the river and very quiet with minimal light pollution. On the doorstep a 10 min walk away are a number of pubs and takeaways. The family who run it are very approachable.
The breakfast is cooked to order no buffet. The bacon and eggs are locally sourced. The eggs with that deep yellow orange colour.
Car parking is free and spacious
Lovely, clean, decent property that is well located in the village.
Really great hosts, they were very welcoming and gracious, and were full of advice and suggestions on what to do and where to go. Dinner was very good, suggest eating in the hotel as the pricing was very good value for an excellent menu. Would definitely stay again!
The owners and staff were very helpful and friendly. Relaxing atmosphere and quiet location. The food is excellent, highly recommend dining in, breakfast and evening meals all freshly cooked, piping hot and delicious, best I've had at a hotel. Plenty of places to visit nearby and countryside walks
Our room overlooked the beautiful and very private garden. The staff were very helpful and friendly, the food in the hotel restaurant was excellent, there was ample parking.
Ottery St Mary was a lovely little town with lots of options to dine out, close to the coast and other places of interest.
The whole experience of staying at the Tumbling Weir Hotel was enjoyable. The check in was welcoming and the room clean and comfortable. The food, including dinner, plentiful and well cooked and presented. I would definitely stay there again if in the area.
Fantastic hotel. So clean, comfy bed and great breakfast. The garden is beautiful and the hotel is in a perfect location to visit Ottery St Mary and all the towns and beaches at Sidmouth, Beer, Branscombe etc. would highly recommend.
We were on a cycling trip, the hotel was everything we needed, the hosts were very accommodating, clean rooms, hot meals and a shared space to play board games in the evening.
