Heavenly Heritage and Literary Legend
Canterbury’s religious and historic significance has inspired literary greatness. Chaucer’s ‘Canterbury Tales’ were based on pilgrimages to the bygone shrine of Thomas A Becket, who was murdered here. The Marlowe Theatre is named after the 16th-century playwright born here, and the Canterbury Museum has an exhibit on Rupert Bear, whose author lived in this River Stour city.
River cruises and punting provide fantastic views of the striking weavers’ houses right on the water, and of Westgate - the UK’s largest city gate. Other sections of the city walls remain, and there are also ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey, named after the 6th-century saint who brought Christianity to England. He was the first Archbishop of Canterbury, but the modern-day seat is the UNESCO World Heritage-listed cathedral, dating to the 12th century.
From the same period are the Norman castle ruins, occupying the site of a wooden fort constructed by William the Conqueror. The mound they sit on in Dane John Gardens is thought to be a Roman cemetery, and an original mosaic is visible in the Roman Museum.
In the Buttermarket half-timbered houses and historic inns are interspersed with shops, and big name brands line the Whitefriars Shopping Centre. The Canterbury accommodation on Booking.com includes luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap hostels and city centre B&Bs.

Beautiful with loads of independent shops.
Beautiful with loads of independent shops. Really beautiful gems around the cathedral. Difficult to find decent parking in town. Public car parks not cheap and can’t vouch for their safety. Most city centre hotels don’t have their own car parks…which is a big problem.

Charming historic and very walkable.
Charming historic and very walkable. The cathedral is a must to visit. We also did a ghost walk which was hugely entertaining. The town has an eclectic mix of eateries , big name stores peppered with interesting independents.

I know Canterbury well as parents have lived in many locations surrounding the area including Reculver, Herne Bay, Seasalter, Whitstable. Not easy to get around from area to close area outside Canterbury using taxis. No taxis from various train stations to various surrounding areas. When travelling with friend in wheel chair it was a nightmare. Could not get any taxis. Luckily we were able to rely on relatively good bus services using disabled free bus passes.

The cathedral was beautiful !
The cathedral was beautiful ! The neighborhood has a lot of walkable streets wear tennis shoes though uneven pavements , very unsafe feeling environment where cycles park. There is limited parking there so you have to park blocks away and pay a premium.

We only stayed one night and saw everything we wanted to around the city; had we come by car we would have gone further afield and I am sure there were buses but this was deliberately a one night city break and we covered everything by walking.
Local independent shops were good, Corkk for English wines and good coffee shop opposite Burgate Coffee Shop with fantastic cakes. The Parrot and The Dolphin served good food and drinks.

Canterbury is a lovely old historical partly walled City,...
Canterbury is a lovely old historical partly walled City, it has a beautiful Cathedral and a castle well worth visiting. The high st is a mixture of modern and quaint old shops, the older buildings/architecture is lovely to see. Great variety of cafes/restaurants/pubs to visit . We visited the Olive Grove for dinner on the first night great food , very friendly staff, good atmosphere! Guided walks available throughout the day & evening . Two days was not enough to see & do all we wanted,
Will definitely be back again soon.
The Lodge is positioned in the grounds of the Cathedral, which is perfect for looking around the centre of Canterbury.
Plus, you have free access to the Cathedral itself, Staff are welcoming and helpful and the rooms are excellent with a view of the Cathedral from your bedroom bay window. I would reccomend not missing out on the breakfast, which is cooked to order and the serving staff look after you very well.
Overall, its a bit more pricey than the usual well known hotels, but, the overall experience is well worth the price.
The location could hardly be better for visiting Canterbury. It is only a ten-minute walk to the city centre. Another big positive is that there is ample parking for anyone arriving by car. The building is a beautiful 14th century timber-frame construction, that is now a restaurant on the ground floor with hotel accommodation above, entered by a separate door so that guests don't have to walk through the dining area to get to bedrooms. There is no breakfast service, but there are plenty of cafes nearby.
The location was so good. it was beautiful and room was clean with comfy beds. a bus stop to Canterbury is right in front of the facility.
the staff were the kindest. all of them were very friendly and helpful in every way they could.
they called for a taxi for us helped with our baggages and even packed delicious breakfast for us since we didn’t have enough time to have it at the hotel.
one of the best stays i’ve evert had and definitely recommend. 11/10
Front desk staff were very lovely, they took the time to ask us if we were in town for business or leisure, when we would prefer to have breakfast, and on check out they helped us leave our luggage with concierge to allow us to spend a bit more time in Canterbury. Hotel was very clean, and the thermostat is fully adjustable, the room heats up or cools down quickly. Breakfast included fresh waffles which I loved. Good choice of cooked or continental.
"It was a great week in Canterbury thanks to this wonderful flat. It is very well located (close to public transport and the city centre) and quiet. It is very nicely furnished and well equipped modernly. Highly recommended for those who want to visit Canterbury and its surroundings and enjoy peace and quiet. The owner is very friendly and at your service for any questions. It was really excellent, best appartment via booking com ever!"
Perfect location, bang in the middle of the town centre, in a beautiful cobbled street square overlooking cafes and specialist shops & beautifies, adjacent to the famous Canterbury Cathedral. Rooms were spacious, comfortable, luxury free toiletries & good quality hot drinks facilities. Plus complimentary chilled still and sparkling water on tap by reception 24/7. Loved the character of the hotel, quaint and historic.
We upgraded our room and were overwhelmed with the size. It was more like an apartment then a hotel room. All facilities in the room were exceptional. The food was plentiful and delicious. The location of the hotel being right in the centre of Canterbury was great, easy walking distance to all areas, and although quite busy and noisy on the street, not a sound could be heard within the room.
The breakfast menu is expansive with options ranging from continental to a traditional English breakfast. The staff was extremely friendly and always willing to help. The location of the hotel is not too far from Canterbury City, and you can walk through picturesque neighborhoods and a beautiful park to reach the high street.
Lovely old building with an interesting history and perfect location. Welcoming staff, room fairly basic but warm, clean and comfortable. Nice garden area. Honesty bar a nice touch. Breakfast went down very well. Last time in Canterbury we stayed at a more expensive hotel nearby but overall preferred staying here.
.Room was a good size.
As with all hotels and B and Bs it would be nice to have lighter weight bedding options for summer months. We were able to open the windows for fresh air and no real traffic noise through the night. Only a few minutes walk into the centre of Canterbury and the cathedral
An amazing traditional British hotel in the beautiful and historical area of Canterbury. The second time, I've been here. The architecture, location, food, and friendly staff are among the best things. Definitely recommend it to everyone who wants to visit the Canterbury area.
Excellent small hotel in Canterbury, easy to find from main road into Canterbury, free parking and only a few minutes walk to Canterbury centre. Large, quiet,
family room overlooking courtyard, four comfortable beds in a lovely period house. Very clean and comfortable.
The hotel very modern and very clean, and it located right at the city centre of Canterbury. The bed is so comfortable, staff’s so friendly too, love the breakfast buffet I would definitely stay at Hampton by Hilton again next time I visit Canterbury
fantastic location - a few minutes walk from the city centre and close to the canterbury city centre coach stop. The breakfast was excellent ( personal service and not buffet style), the room is clean, spacious and the bed was very comfortable.
It was pet friendly hotel we could find in Canterbury close to the city center and all the attractions. The hotel has open grass area where we can take our pet out. They have 24 hr reception, and were very kind. The room was clean and cozy.
The location was ideal for our visit to Canterbury. Only a couple of miles out so very handy for the city centre. The location was in a secluded countryside area with lots of land to walk our dogs.
Right in the centre of Canterbury, so most sights are within a few minutes walking distance. Room facilities were quite nice, apart from the bed. Friendly staff.
Well located for walking into centre of Canterbury. Attractive hotel with beautiful gardens with lots of seating for guests. Good parking and easy to find.
