Being February it wasn't beach weather and we only did a two night mid-week trip. We visited the charming local museum and strolled around the narrow streets and local shops. Dartmouth is built on two sides of a valley but if you don't like walking up hill there is a regular bus to take you around town. We took advice and booked restaurants ahead. The Royal Castle Hotel offers a really good menu in a pub setting where the food and service were excellent. We also ate at the Embankment where the menu is not so traditional but the food was excellent. We took a boat trip with a very entertaining and informative commentary. Sadly the steam train from Kingswear wasn't running mid-week out of season but we drove to Buckfast Abbey which is well worth a visit. Finally we lunched at Rockfish, majoring in fish of course, another excellent meal to set us up for the drive home.

Loved being by the river.
Loved being by the river. Ferries for vehicles or on foot very close to Bayards and reasonably priced.
Ample gift shops, food stores, museums, Information Building (excellent staff) to help.
Walks and historical landmarks nearby, Bayards Cove, Dartmouth Castle (a bit expensive for what we saw and cafe closed an hour earlier than the castle), historical walks to castle.
Plenty of pubs, eating houses etc.
Some restaurants exceptionally expensive but with so many £m's of pounds worth of yachts and boats in harbour, they would cater for everyone.
River cruise lovely to Ditsmarsh there and back, viewing Agatha Christie's house alongside the river.
Could probably stay a week (as opposed to 3 nights) and still enjoy Dartmouth.
Was told that February/March is a good time to visit as Dartmouth is not "too full" and you can get into the pubs and restaurants without queueing. However, some river boats not operating until March/April or May but there were adequate amounts operating for number of people in Dartmouth during February.

The River Dart estuary is just stunning, full of bobbing boats - there's so much to see and do in Dartmouth itself. Full of history, beautiful old buildings, hidden gems, cobbled streets and a long waterfront that entices you to walk, either to Dartmouth Castle or Dittisham. Don't miss the Dartmouth Museum, book into a few of the fabulous restaurants, some with a Michelin star, and a tour of the Naval College if you have time!

We were only there for one night (unfortunately) have been to Dartmouth many times before but never stayed at Waterfront House. We couldn’t fault it. Lovely comfortable room with magnificent view and it was so quiet. Breakfast was excellent and the owners/managers were very nice.

A pretty old town. very picturesque.
A pretty old town. very picturesque. Some upmarket shops and lots of bars and restaurants. We ate at Rockfish and Taylor's which were both very good, although Taylor's was expensive. The town centre is flat and compact but is steep leading out of town. The town was bustling with people, even at the end of September. I would recommend the boat trip up the river Dart to Totnes and the steam railway to Paignton for trips out.
John and Barbara made us feel really at home, more like staying in a friend's home than a bland hotel. Breakfast was great with everyone sat around a huge table together being a really good opportunity to get to know more about your fellow guests and share tips for your visit. Temperature taken every morning and felt very safe. Just a short walk downhill to town, though it seems further coming back up the hill after a fantastic meal in one of Dartmouth's great restaurants.
Beautifully appointed room, great breakfast and Nikki and Mitch are the very best hosts!! Bistro food is outstanding. Location is quiet but so close to the best areas for discovering historic Dartmouth. We were warmly greeted, and treated like family during our four night stay! A warm and cozy retreat to come back to after a day of exploring. Highly recommended!!!!
We were given a very nice room. Unfortunately, we had an issue with the shower and were immediately given an upgrade to our original room. Excellent service. The staff and management could not be more helpful.
We had dinner and breakfast at the hotel - excellent.
Can thoroughly recommend Brown's Hotel. If we return to Dartmouth our choice of hotel is really easy.
The staff were all really nice, they were very personable, attentive and really wanted to please. The hotel is well known to us in terms of location and we were really impressed with the fit-out internally. The restaurant area is very comfortable and welcoming and the food is excellent. We would definitely book again if we were coming to Dartmouth in the future.
Absolutely perfect location for a stay in Dartmouth. The hotel has such charm and the staff are wonderful. We stayed during a heat wave and the air con in our room meant we had a perfect night’s sleep - despite the heat! We ate in the restaurant in the evening and the food was delicious. Breakfast was also great with loads of choice.
Really well thought out room with nice touches for design and comfort. Really easy to get keys etc and a wonderful central Dartmouth location. The room had everything we could need for our weekend stay and was the perfect base for us. When we saw Noal he was welcoming and friendly without being overbearing - just right!

Location, right in the centre of town, and car parking nearby, friendly staff when we found them, clean and fresh with decent shower plenty of tea and coffee and trusted honesty box for extras . Expensive place Dartmouth so fair price considering.

The only thing that surprised us that we were up near the top of a long hill, but as the Dartmouth town terrain is up the hillside from the river, we soon adapted. Otherwise, we were made to feel welcome and the stay couldn't have been better.
Amazing location for exploring Dartmouth. Great to have a few kitchen facilities when travelling with children. Cosy for two adults and two children but more space than a family hotel room. Would definitely recommend. Hope to stay again.
The location the property, the property is extremely well kept, it suited the family better than a hotel because of the extra space it provided. Dartmouth is just a lovely place to stay with so much to see and do.
Great location and fantastic view over Dartmouth from the little balcony. Very different room from most B&B accommodation but in a good way. Staff friendly.
