Founded by the Phocaeans in 600 B.C., the long history of Marseille has produced an interesting and dynamic port-side city bursting with cultural diversity. Watch the fishermen sell their catch by auction at Vieux Harbor or cruise along the Corniche roads with views of the Calanques, dramatic rocky inlets to the sea.
The le Cours Julien and la Plaine areas provide a trendy hangout and every Thursday and Saturday morning, the Plaine market offers its various wares. This is the area to buy a novel from a hip bookshop or watch your kids on one of the playgrounds. There are also plentiful cafes to sip a cappuccino and watch the world go by.
If a culture packed vacation is on the agenda, the Musée d'Archéologie Méditerranéenne, Notre Dame de la Garde and Palais Longchamp won’t disappoint. The unique Unité d'Habitation, designed by famous architect Le Corbusier, contains everything from a shopping street to housing and has spectacular views of the terracotta landscape that makes Marseille so distinctive.

Ibis styles hotel, it was brilliant and so close to the railway station, for people wanting to get to their next destination, the apartment even though they said they were to the train station, you get lost trying to find it. We forfeited two night’s accommodation to stay in somewhere decent ie: the Ibis Styles. Three minutes via metro tunnel to station.

In fine weather the port and surrounding esplanade is bursting with activity and colour, people, markets, boats, musicians and beautiful cafes and restaurants. The city bus tour is highly recommended to get a glimpse of the city and surrounding attractions, history, architecture and the spectacular Basilique Notre dam de la Garde that overlooks the city.

Not the safest city in the world, but with a beautiful and diverse architecture, and great things to see. A day and half is pretty enough to visit the whole city on foot, with a boat tour to Parc National des Calanques.

Fantastic city, with beautiful sunny weather.
Fantastic city, with beautiful sunny weather. Prices were reasonable and the locals were all nice to us. The public transportation was great, we could get to everywhere in a short amount of time.
All the sights can be visited during a long weekend.
In winter it is also possible to travel by boat. The life is pretty vivid at the port.

I love the city and ambient, however sometimes it doesn't look safe in the city center where many immigrants live. Unfortunately ugly graffitis spoil almost every building in the city :(
Anyway, perfect public transport, amazing cuisine and architecture are all the best about Marseille

Marseille is an overlooked destination--so much talk of the city being unsafe, dirty, gritty, etc. It is absolutely different than Paris or the other Med cities in France (Nice, Cannes, etc), but that is exactly why we love it. Marseille is older than France and has long been a port city with a mix of cultures--it is often "not French enough" for some, but we love the mix of North African, Arabic, and Mediterranean influences. Food is incredible, views are stunning, 300-plus days of sunshine a year. Yes, there is graffiti/street art--if that's a turn-off, stay away. We love its uniqueness--five days was not enough, we can't wait to get back.
-super convenient in terms of transportation. 2 metro stops at Vieux Porte from Marseille St Charles station. Many bus lines crossing the area and the hop on place for many boat trips including Parc Calanques, Point Rouge, Frioul and Estaque.
-very spacious apartment , big living room with kitchen and dining place attached , separate toilet and shower room.
- very important, situated in a safe neighbourhood
- clear instructions on picking up the keys at the nearest Ibis hotel reception. Very smooth and no issues.
We had a beautiful stay! Cedric was super helpful in messaging us and delivering the keys and he also shared a lot of tips of activities to do around.
The studio matches the photos, it is a little studio but a very good location (5 min walking to the Beach of Catalans), and 30 min walking to the Vieux Port (nice and pleasant walk).
There was also a fan which turned out to be super helpful due to the heat in Marseille :)
Facilities were super clean!
Thank you Cedric for your warm welcome :)
I stayed in this apartment for 11 days. I found it to be clean, comfortable and very well-equipped for preparing my meals. Additionally, it is charmingly decorated with attention to providing better quality linens and extra items for comfort such as pillows and throws. The location is ideal for experiencing all that the Vieux Port and Panier districts have to offer. as a bonus, the apartment faces west and the sunsets are gorgeous. This is now my go to place when I visit Marseille.
Staff was really nice. We changed rooms twice after check in due to technicalities and they were nothing but friendly and helpful.
Design is very interesting.
Sea view and balcony was incredible.
Bagage and car gets taken care of by staff. No other 4 star hotel did that in France during our two weeks round trip.
Small garden and private beach for walking the dog.
VERY good breakfast. Buffet is incredible.
I chose the hotel mainly for the central location. I knew that I will be out also during the night and Marseille is not the safest place in France. Let's start with the positive things:
Staff was friendly, internet wifi was working well and the best thing was the breakfast. I was quite surprised that they even offered fresh pressed orange juice. The choice was really good for the level of the hotel!
Roomy, comfortable studio in a great location, next to the trendy Panier district and lively Vieux Port. Good functional kitchenette and large bathroom. We enjoyed being on an upper floor of a typical Marseille apartment building with wrought iron balconies & high ceilings. The property manager was responsive and helpful when we had questions.
A great location in walking distance (15 min) to the Vieux Port.
If you travel by car you might be aware that parking in Marseille can be a tad risky (burglaries are common), and even public car parks are not safe. So key is a hotel with its own parking, which you find here.
Breakfast is buffet style, and quite good.
We stayed a long weekend in Marseille and the appartement was a great choice. It’s in a nice neighborhood, very practical with Cafes and Supermarkets around.
You can walk easily everywhere, to the Vieux port just 15min.
Communication with Xavier was great and the easy Check-in and Check-out as well.
The location was excellent - a short walk to Vieux Port. Super glad that the hotel has an elevator and air conditioning which helps in the summer months. The hotel was clean and nicely decorated. It does feel quite homey. Would recommend this to anyone looking for accom in Marseille.
Beautiful, grand hotel in the heart of Vieux Port. Rooms were very spacious and comfortable. Great for my toddler to run around and play. Great for family gathering. Excellent service. Excellent breakfast. Everything about the stay was perfect! I would highly recommend this hotel.
Close to the beach. We can go to Vieux Port without changing buses. There are also restaurants scattered around and a large supermarket nearby. The hotel facilities are very good and the rooms are spacious. The balcony is large and we can enjoy our meals outside.
Friendliness of the staff who couldn’t have been more helpful. The position of the hotel overlooking the Vieux Port was excellent with many bars and restaurants within easy walking distance. The food was also amongst the best we ate during our stay.
Been here 7 years ago, due to the location which is 3 minutes of work from the Vieux port metro station, so with the same reason I am choosing this hotel again due to its location. The room is very good, and there are convenient store nearby.
Great hotel to spend one night when having a early train from Marseille St. Charles, the hotel is not far from the Vieux Port and the staff was super helpful in showing our way around and recommending a great restaurant for the evening.
Location is perfect -minutes from MUCEM, Le Panier, Vieux Port.
A small studio flat but it was really well designed with good kitchen, washing machine, AC and really nice decor. Small balcony was good too.
It was clean as well.
Great location with shops and restaurant 5 mins from le panier and 10 mins from le vieux port. parking nearby too and you get a discount by staying at the hotel. Room was nice with a baby bed added so just practical for us.
Amazing Location. Quiet and peaceful garden in the center of the "Panier" area. 5 min walk from "Le vieux port". Our hosts were very welcoming and nice, with a lot of great recommendations (restaurants, visits, etc.)
Perfect location for exploring Marseille. Right on the front overlooking the vieux port and within walking distance of all the key sites. The staff were really nice and helpful and the hotel was superclean
