Nice historical town at the river Yonne and Canal de Nivernais. Old city center much bigger than expected. We were positively surprised that obviously the city council seems to be interested to keep pedestrian places clean - which is not always the standard in France in cities of this size.
There was a great open-air art-exhibition (July 2023) at the river bank of the Yonne.
Would come back again to visit museums and some nicely located restaurants.

Auxerre the capital of Yonne department and fourth largest...
Auxerre the capital of Yonne department and fourth largest Burgundian city lying on the banks of river Yonne 150 km South West Paris and 120 km North West Dijon. Auxerre was a flourishing Gallo-Roman centre named Autissiodorum in the first century AD and in the third century became episcopal chair, bishopric the provincial capital of the Roman Empire, receiving a cathedral in the fifth when the city walls were built by the feudal lords/counts of Burgundy. Renowned for vine cultivation and production of fine Burgundian wines including Chablis, in 1995 Auxerre was named Town of Art and History indeed evident in this medieval city with its myriad of half-timbered buildings enshrouded with French Renaissances residences.
The perfect place to stay is the Clos St Eusebe apartment within the WineMakers House in the heart of the city to explore the places of interest:
Cathedral of St Elieme (Gothic)
Abbey Saint Germain (Housing Bishops of Auxerre Tomb)
Tour de l'Horloge d'Auxerre (Clock Tower)
St Pierre en Vallee Church (Local wine growers financed)
Church of St Eusebe (Romanesque)

Really charming town fronting the Yonne river with a lovely waterfront, moored river boats and plenty of excellent restaurants & cafes. Beautiful places of historical interest including an incredible Cathedral, Abbey & Church - highly unusual for a town of this size.

We loved this accommodation and this town so much we stayed an extra night. Cute exposed timber houses and so many cathedrals make this small walking town a fun place to explore. The St Germain Abbey has super old frescos and contemporary art as well. Follow the trail of Cadel Russell to see everything there is to see in this beautiful fairytale town. Stop at the Horological Tower. Make sure to get baked goods at Eric Roy. Picnic on the Yonne river. Off the beaten path, yet so close to Paris.

An interesting and friendly small city with good food, wine and lovely countryside close by. I would say there is enough to see and do for a stay of around 1.5 to 2 days but on the recommendation of the hotel staff and some French guests, I hired a bike on my third day and cycled 30 miles along the Canal de Nivernais and back. The city itself has some very striking architecture and plenty of restaurants and bars. The crypt below the Cathedral and the frescoes in L'Abbaye de St Germain are the main sights but it's also a good place just to amble around.
Amazing little hotel with a really personal homely feel. Hotel is really tastefully decorated to keep in line with the style of hotel. Rooms are a great size with lovely bathrooms. Staff pay so much attention to details which keeps the place absolutely spotless. Highly recommend staying here for a feel of an authentic chateau. Pool is spotless clean and the water is warm. Lovely addition. Also large natural garden at the rear. Would definitely stay here again in a heartbeat. The owners are also so lovely.
Location is great! A few steps to the shops and the vibrant centre of Auxerre! The room is airy and gorgeous! The building itself is so beautiful and the garden is calm, green and very private. An oase in a city. Our children loved the room. The bathroom is very spacious and romantic! We had a very relaxed stay with a trip to Auxerre and driving along to the Dordogne. The owners are very friendly and you can ask anything, they will help you with a big smile!
Lovely hotel with nice gardens. The host and hostess were really nice. We did not have time to use the swimming pool, unfortunately but it looked inviting! Auxerre itself is one of the most impressive towns we have visited in France. Pity we were just over-nighting. Would like to come again! The only down side to the town were the over-enthusiastic motor bikers who seem to enjoy careering around the lovely little picturesque streets and alleyways!
The central location and the character town house in Auxerre was a pleasure to stay in. The family host Jerome greeted us as friends of his family and was very interesting to talk to and also very helpful. Cases carried by him to our room, local history etc. Breakfast was relaxed and of a high standard with home made conserves etc. A thoroughly good family home atmosphere and highly recommended.
Very nice room located on the top floor of a small commercial building about five minutes walk from the centre of Auxerre. Access via door code and key box worked fine. Very comfortable bed and nicely equipped. The free-standing bath was great for a bath but a bit tricky for a shower. There is paid-for on-street parking outside (free on Sunday) or unrestricted on-street parking a few roads away.
Location was very good and easy 10 min walk to centre of town. The apartment had everything needed for a comfortable stay. Auxerre is a lovely town with lots to see and if travelling by car there are pretty villages nearby worth a visit. Parking available at back of apartment block. Very quiet area.
Room was comfortable but lacking in character given the building and the indication of this being a "boutique" hotel. We would have preferred a separate shower. Not too far from central Auxerre but consider booking the restaurant opposite in advance if you dont want to walk far.
Cedric was so helpful and interesting to talk to. I would definitely stay here again on a return trip to Auxerre. Tip… lots of restaurants and shops are closed on Mondays. The apartment was stylish and well equiped.
Great breakfast and perfect location in Auxerre city center. Wonderful hosts. Beautifully renovated home. Rooms and beds very comfortable. Bathroom updated and user friendly. Auxerre itself is a hidden gem.
Hotel is nice located close to the river. 10 min walk t the centre. Room clean and spacious. Very nice spacious bathroom.
Breakfast very good and served at 07.00 so you can get away quickly in the morning.
Clean and well-equipped apartment. Situated in a quiet residential area yet only 10 mins walk from the centre of Auxerre. We stayed just one night as a stopover, but would highly recommend for longer.
Good place to stay. It was quiet and beautiful scenery. My daughter was very happy to live even for a few days on a bateau. And the location is very good not far from the central of the city Auxerre.
View from breakfast room was excellent and there was a sensation of spaciousness throughout the hotel which we weren't expecting. Staff friendly and efficient in a low-key way.
The location in the centre of the old town with lots to see and do, eateries close by.
The privacy of the apartment; the helpfulness of the host Jeremy.
Nice hotel not too far from centre of Auxerre and close to motorways, lovely looking pool, which unfortunately we didn't have time to try, good breakfast.
