Birdwatching is nice at the lagoon but overall, we were a bit disappointed. Crooked Tree is supposed to be one of the hotspots for bird watchers, we saw a greater variety of birds in all the other places we stayed in Belize. We found Crooked Tree a bit depressing. There are no shops, no restaurants, only dirt roads and other than the lagoon, nothing to see or do. It's not a beautiful place. It's not worth staying more than two days.

All wheel drive is a good idea.

All wheel drive is a good idea. This area may flood in the wet season. We went late April. Hot and dry, but a good time to see the birds because the lagoon is low, forcing the birds into smaller areas. An hour drive to the monkey sanctuary and Altun-Ha, a Mayan ruin.

Crooked Tree was a bit disappointing., there is not much to see. Lonely Planet says April is best for birding but because the water level is very low you can neither go on a boat or canoe. So all the birds on the lagoon are just dots far away. We saw the best birds in Beck’s B&B garden! The museum and visitor centre was closed, restaurants (apart from the lodges) were closed. One night is definitely enough, or you can skip it if you are on a tight schedule. Might be better at other time of the year...
