Paraty, Brazil, is best navigated on foot due to its small size and pedestrianised historic centre. For longer distances, local buses operate regularly. Cycling is another viable option, with bike rentals available. Taxis are also accessible for convenient travel. Please note, driving is not recommended due to limited parking.
The Historic Centre, or Centro Histórico, is the best area to stay in Paraty, Brazil. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site, brimming with charming colonial architecture, vibrant restaurants, and unique shops. It's also conveniently close to the city's main attractions and the harbour.
Emerald-coloured Forests and Turquoise Waters
Paraty is surrounded by emerald green forests attached to mountains that plummet directly into turquoise waters or white-sand beaches. The cobblestone streets and colonial houses of the city centre pay homage to its Portuguese roots, and accessible islands and secluded beaches lure the sun-seeking crowds.
White buildings decorated with colourful door arches and window surrounds line the small lanes of the historic old town. The 17th-century First Church of Our Lady of the Remedies watches over the shaded eastern meeting point of Matriz Square.
North of the canal are Pontal and Jabaquara beaches that are split by the Perpetual Defender fortress, built by the British in the 18th century. Hiring a boat will take you out to more remote islands like diving hot spot Ilha dos Meros or unspoilt Paraty-Mirim Beach, south of the city.
As part of Brazil’s Costa Verde coast, the nearby Gold Trail and Serra da Bocaina National Park highlight the native Atlantic forest and fauna such as the sloth.
Whether you are seeking a peaceful nature retreat, beachside guest house or city centre hostel, Booking.com has an option for you.
It’s a must see for any visitor or even Brazilian.
It’s a must see for any visitor or even Brazilian. A beautiful town with a historic center. The city has various nice restaurants (but usually quite pricy) and shops.
Since it’s not in the mountains, it’s easier to visit than for example ouro preto.

I think 1 or 2 nights is just right.
I think 1 or 2 nights is just right. It is nice to do a layover in Paraty because on the bus ride to and from (Rio/Sao Paulo) you can see quite a bit of the smaller towns and nature. If you did a bus direct from SP to Rio it would stick to the main highways and you wouldn't see as much. Worth a visit if you have time but keep in mind everything will be slightly more expensive as local tourists also like coming here. There are also lots of festivals so depending if you like festivals you could time your trip to coincide with one of them. During my stay there was a gastronomy festival which was pretty cool. They had cooking demonstrations and free samples of stuff.

Paraty is nothing more than a tourist trap and scam.
Paraty is nothing more than a tourist trap and scam. It is just 4 streets of colonial buildings with arrogant people. It is marketed extremely well as you believe that Paraty is a village of only colonial buildings however to our surprise they have added (obviously quite some time ago) more buildings and a bigger village the new town shall we call it. It is full of homeless people and danger the floor is disgusting and the people are intimidating. The supermarket is poorly built shed with insects everywhere and extremely overpriced. we left a day earlier than planned as we could not wait to escape the hell hole.

Paraty has a very smalll historical area.
Paraty has a very smalll historical area. Unless you want to take a boat trip you can view the area in a couple of hours. The beaches in Paraty itself are not very nice for swimming but outside there are beautiful beaches and areas.

I love Paraty, and I always come back there.
I love Paraty, and I always come back there. The city is quaint, charm, small. The Historic Centre, old from the discover of Brasil, with stone streets. This year i went to the Bourbon Jazz Festival, and it was amazing. In Paraty there are delicious restaurants, ice cream shop (O Finlandês and Pistache best ones in my opinion). And i would like to have more time to go around with boat (I just did 1 tour with the boat)and I went to a trekking (pão de açúcar)- Ride to in Parati Mirim and from there 20 min by boat. Amazing
This was a fantastic hotel that felt very homely. Our rooms were incredibly clean and comfortable, and the staff was very accommodating. We were able to book our tours directly through the staff, without added commission. Breakfast was a highlight here - as vegetarians, we often struggle but were pleasantly surprised by the variety of food, the amazing views and the monkeys that joined from a distance! Would recommend to anyone visiting Paraty.
Everything was incredible! The service is exceptional, and such a beautiful, relaxing space.
the views, the food and facilities are also perfect!
you are a little further out from the old town of Paraty but it is a short car journey away and you have easy access to taxi’s that the hotel arranges for you so you have best of both worlds, and you are close to a beautiful beach and restaurant.
Maris was the best hotel we stayed in Brasil. Lillian and her team made our stay in Paraty unforgettable. The hotel was exceptionally clean, beautifully presented rooms and the breakfast was really really good ! The hotel is beautiful and great location but still very quiet for sleeping at night. All of the staff were so friendly and helpful and went above and beyond during our short stay!
Amazing Pousada, Hotel and place ! We loved everything there ! The staff was amazing, the Owners and Maria Cruz were amazingly nice. The place is beautiful and well decorated, in the center of the Old Town of Paraty. Marinette did the best caipirinhas of Paraty ! :) The rooms were nice, and the little pool was so chill. The breakfasts were amazing. Perfect place to rest and enjoy Paraty !
This was a nice pousada, located just a few minutes' walk from the old town centre. The environment of the pousada is welcoming, with a sheltered patio for guests to relax.
I was mostly in contact with Manuella, who was very pleasant to deal with, and helpful in organising a tour with a local tour company.
Casa Turquesa is an incredibly charming hotel. Not only the Pousada itself is absolutely beautiful and curated with utmost taste, but the staff go out of their way to make your stay lovely and as comfortable as possible. Staying at Casa Turquesa feels like being at home: a gem of a home.
Lovely old historic 2 buildings, kept in original condition, Best trained staff we have met so far, Paraty great old unesco
best breakfast had in brazil, Lovely room big bright comfortable , very private no noise (unusual for brazil) Lovely pool area
Parking in difficult town
Paraty and it’s surroundings are insanely beautiful. The stay at Pousada da Marquesa was magical. The staff is very friendly, the building like stepping into another era (in a positive way!), wish we could have stayed much longer! Obrigado por tudo. Esperamos voltar um dia!
The Pousada Alecrim Dourado is a good starting point for exploring the city, right in front of Paraty's historic old town. The rooms are well equipped and the staff are very friendly. In addition, the breakfast was very extensive and delicious.
Beautiful pousada, comfortable and typical. Well-maintained with local products and arts. Super friendly staff. Perfect location, safe and central. No need of a car while staying there. Very recommended for your stay in Paraty!
It was a perfect stay at Pousada Bartholomeu. Simple and comfortable, with a very attentive staff and an excellent location. Nothing to complain about, and would stay there again for sure.
the pousada is very pretty and well maintained. the rooms were rustic (but I think that is the beauty of the place), but comfortable. great location. we had a good time there.
The location is amazing, hotel is comfortable, we had the rooms with the balconies upstairs and it was really nice. it’s everything you can expect from a good Pousada.
Suites Paraty was almost perfect! The location was great especially next to both the old town and bus station. The rooms were cleaned daily and the staff were great!
