The Doghouse is a boutique Guesthouse run by a London couple who fell in love with Brugge & moved here with their two small dogs. Primarily aimed at dog-lovers & dog owners Susie & Nick also welcome guests who are looking for something a little less conventional. Here, in the heart of the old city, they open their home to share with you the familiar & not so familiar faces of Brugge. After a 30 year career involving much international travel & countless corporate hotels, Susie designed The Doghouse to be a true home-from-home experience. The renovation of the 18th century Gentleman's House created 3 stylish rooms & relaxed common areas where you can sit & enjoy the company of the hosts & other guests. Nick is always happy to chat through the selection of locals beers in the Honesty Bar where wine & soft drinks are also available. Nick & Susie's aim is for The Doghouse to be memorable, as much for the break you experience here, as for the name. The house is old and the spiral staircase steep but you are rewarded with views of the canal and rooftops. As long as you can carry yourself up the stairs they are always happy to help with the luggage (they see it as a great workout!)
We moved to Brugge following careers in the fashion industry & a business built around a passion for restoring classic cars. We came for a weekend escape from our busy lives & found ourselves coming back again and again. We made local friends & bought hand-built Belgian bikes, the like of which we offer on a complimentary basis to our guests so that you may experience Brugge as a local! Whilst maintaining our sense of “British-ness” we have looked to the riches of the trading history of the area & married it with a pared-back modern aesthetic, to offer relaxed luxury in an informal atmosphere. We enjoyed shopping locally to bring you the locally manufactured Belgian linens, the ceramics & beautiful Achielle bikes made just 10km away. In our much-loved home you’ll find the familiar Bed & Breakfast traditions - privacy & sociability - respected in equal measure. Whilst we specialise in serving a full English breakfast with organic, locally sourced ingredients we can also offer alternatives on request including vegetarian, vegan, gluten & dairy-free. In our down-time we take our dogs out of the city for forest and beach walks and we’re always happy to share these locations.
The canalside property is ideally situated within easy walking distance of the Markt, the Fish Market, museums, shopping streets, boat trips and the finest bars, cafes and restaurants. We enjoy sharing with you our favourite places from the local brown café and favoured eating places to tips on the best places to shop and beachy dog walks. This residential area remains largely unspoilt and surprisingly quiet for such a central location. But it is also easy to take out the complimentary bikes to explore further afield including the beautiful town of Damme, the nearby Dutch town of Sluis and on to the coast and the resort of Knokke. The street where the Doghouse is situated, Verversdijk, is very old indeed, with records dating back to 1290. It owes its name to the cloth dyers who worked here and traded for wool with the English & the Scotts residing on the East bank of the St. Annarei canal. In the Middle Ages, Verversdijk formed the heart of the commercial city where many Englishmen had their warehouses and offices.
