It's an old monastery that is the hallmark of the village. The village is about one millenium years and has a fortress ruin overlooking it all. The forests and mountainous hills all around is a magic place for hikes and discovering amazing castles and churches.

Durnstein is a strange village; the old centre is attractive and interesting, but you get a feeling that it's a ghost town. It seems to exist for day trippers, and it doesn't have a life of its own. The only shops are tourist shops - no pharmacies, no grocery shops, no stationeries selling newspapers and magazines.... Some eateries close by 6pm and after that, it really is a ghost town.

Unfortunately there were some problems... .
The WiFi inside the room did not work. I have asked twice and it was fixed but for just a few hours... so I had to use my data plan on my phone.
Bed was very uncomfortable. It was a double bad but... with some board in the middle, with one side of bed being higher than the other part and squicking on every move in the bed.
The only way I could shower was if I was holding the shower had in my hand..... which made it impossible to wash properly my heir and.... water was splushing from defecting shower head.
Breakfast was great.... people were very nice but... I would not stay in this hotel again.

I stayed here with my wife, two young daughters, and my in-laws. We stayed for 3 nights and had a wonderful experience. Everyone was so helpful and service oriented. The pool was perfect for us to relax in. The food is excellent at the restaurant and the views along the Danube are gorgeous.

Beautiful picturesque town in the Wachau valley.
Beautiful picturesque town in the Wachau valley. Lots of wineries nearby and some cute restaurants in the town itself. Very walkable. Touristy by day with people coming from Vienna but insanely quiet by night. We felt like we had the whole town to ourselves!
The hotel is a stunning historic building right on the Danube, filled with works of art. The owner, Mrs. Thiery, took special care for us; the restaurant has an exceptional menu, and Csaba, one of the excellent support staff, helped us with our bike program providing us with a personal lift in his car. Just a remarkable place, with caring and delightful staff (the restaurant not has a gourmet menu but the waiters are cheery & entertaining) - a total remarkable experience!
The location is exceptionally picturesque comprising endlessly terraced grape vines with the mighty Danube River in the foreground and deep green pine forested hills behind. The food in the region (Lower Austria) was sensational, the hosts were exceedingly friendly and welcoming, and the accommodation (fully contained apartment) was modern and immaculate. We definitely intend to return in the future.
Bioweingut Schmidl is in a very peaceful location but also very close to downtown Durnstein. The rooms are very large, comfortable and clean. The host, Theresa, was very friendly and accommodating. You can sit on the terrace and enjoy the views of the vineyards and the castle - it's amazing. We also tasted their wine and it was excellent as well as their breakfast. We just wish we had stayed longer.
Accomodation in the centre of the very nice old city, kind owners, breakfast super. Wifi did not work very well. We could come with the car close to the pension on the beginning, and then we could park for free about 500m behind the old part.
Old Durnstein is really beautiful!
In the village is also Domane Wachau - wine factory.
I would be happy to come again :)
The location, the location and once more the location, it is perfect. Just about 150 m from the Hotel Schloss Dürnstein and as close to the Donau as possible and parking on site. What else could you ask? Of course, Donau Radweg. But at the Gästehouse Stöger the cycle road is just outside the door. And you have a garage for the bikes. Breakfast is also very good.
Gästezimmer Rolea was a great place to stay with a very welcoming family, who went above and beyond to ensure our stay was comfortable. The house is in a great location on the edge of Durnstein and very walkable to the attractions in town. Breakfast was extensive (particularly for a smaller B&B), and the place is very dog friendly.
A beautiful old hotel with a lovely staff, located in a beautiful town.
We had a room with amazing view of the river and the inner court. The hotel have a fantastic restaurant with a terrace over the river, great food and great service. Very friendly for children.
They will to arrange every ask of us.
Great location in the centre of Dürnstein. appreciated the information and call in advance of the stay. house had all the facilities we needed. really enjoyed the outdoors terrace. the place was really clean and saw the cleaner who was helpful.
Property. was the original Townhall built in 1453, had good bones ! Very large comfortable room, extremely quiet, even with open windows. Nice breakfast . Close to the walk up to the Durnstein Ruin, it’s a harder walk but so worth the views
The hotel was fantastic, both the accommodation and the service of the staff. Here we enjoyed the best breakfast of the whole trip, swimming in the pool, bike ride, taxi service, thanks to the hotel staff for everything
Absolutely stunning apartments, very spacious, neat and cozy. Just next to the wine-yards. We even had a walk-in wine cellar in the apartment.
The apartments are in good proximity to both Durnstein and Krems
Just a short walk to the “old town” of Durnstein. Beautiful, modern large room with kitchen. A secure place for our bicycles. Great breakfast and a very friendly and kind host.
Wonderful breakfast, great location, 5 min walk downhill from Durnstein‘s main road. The room and en-suite bathroom was clean, there was a locked bike room.
