FAQs about hotels in Coimbra

A Seat of Learning and Royalty

Portugal’s medieval capital, and a pioneer of fado music alongside its modern counterpart Lisbon, Coimbra is a vibrant university city with a good helping of historic sights.

The university is the country’s oldest and its attractive buildings cover a small hill overlooking the Mondego River. The institution has an excellent science museum, the ornate Joanina Library, and one of the world’s oldest botanical gardens which contributes to the lush landscape.

The midweek nightlife in the city’s bars and restaurants is popular with students, while shopping options range from the stores of the CoimbraShopping complex to smaller boutiques on cobbled streets in the historic Baixa district.

The medieval centre houses the museum of Coimbran sculptor Machado de Castro and the Old Cathedral, begun under the reign of the first Portuguese King, Afonso Henriques. He is buried in Santa Cruz Monastery, while the tomb of a later queen – Elizabeth of Aragon – is in the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova. She founded this hilltop convent to replace flood-prone Santa Clara-a-Velha below. Between them is Portugal dos Pequenitos where Portugal’s main monuments are reproduced in miniature.

Nearby is Quinta das Lágrimas, a 19th-century mansion that is now a luxury hotel on Booking.com. Also available are cheap hostels and guest houses near the 2 main train stations.

Coimbra is a great city with very interesting historical sites and churches. Interesting shops and restaurants. the Igreja santo Christo is especially good to visit situated in a lovely square. The adjoining old cafe has a wonderful atmosphere with a performance of FADO (traditional Portuguese music ) every weekday from 6pm

Five-minute walk from Coimbra A train station; online pix meant we knew exactly which building to look for. This is a charming and old-fashioned hotel that antique-lovers should really enjoy; it's like being on the set of a 1920s or earlier movie, and has an old-fashioned wood-lined elevator, complete with folding bench. We loved the place, but ... The one perturbing thing was the lack of in-room Wifi, but there are lots of comfortable spaces to connect on the main floor. For a couple of vacation days, though, this was not a big deal.

Coimbra was an unexpected pleasure to visit.

Coimbra was an unexpected pleasure to visit. We had great accommodation in an accessible (by car) area, but removed from the every day bustle. Interesting old town, enjoyable music/fado offerings, good walks along the river and excellent food were all recommended by our helpful and knowledgable host. Had trouble finding parking at first (it's not well signed IMO),

The world heritage site of the University Library is good...

The world heritage site of the University Library is good but not exceptional. You need to book for it and the booking place is nowhere near the Library. The ticket gets you into the Chemistry Building and main hall, both well worth seeing. The Art Museum in the monastery and above the Roman Forum was the best place in Coimbra for me. St Tiago was the best church, brilliant early interior. Cathedral good and unusual in that was plain. Good views from the opposite side of the river and a couple of good monasteries there. Loads of good churches to see.Roman Conimbriga an occasional bus journey away is the best Roman site in Portugal. Funicular railway and an Exhibition place near the base. This used to be a monastic refectory and photogenic fountains close by. Really good. I suspect hardly any tourists visit I had visited Coimbra in Septermber 1978, amazed how many people now visit. Take the Lonely Planet Book with you.

Interesting historical city with one of the oldest...

Interesting historical city with one of the oldest universities in the world. Old town on top of the hill is quite spectacular with two cathedrals and a myriad of historical buildings. On the other side of the hill there are well laid out Botanic gardens with tropical flora and great views. All this within 10 mins of city centre! Good transport links with rail and intercity express buses. 40 mins north by train takes you to coastal town of Aveiro which will be European city of culture for 2024. A minor Venice with canals and many beautiful buildings Canal trips by gondola and many interesting eating places.

Coimbra was lovely and every meal that we had was excellent, unfortunately it rained for our whole visit which did impede what we were able to do. It was much more hilly than we had expected, but apart from that it was easy to get around and there is an excellent bus service.

We have stayed at this hotel only for one night as we were travelling by car across Portugal. The hotel was on our way to Portu and had a free parking, which was great. We liked it a lot there, the room was spacious, with a balcony, the view was nice. The staff were very welcome and helpful. We highly recommend to have a dinner in their restaurant, we loved it, they had a nice selection of wines and the food was delicious, beautifully served and cooked with love. They told us they use veggies from their own farm, which I find really cool.

A nice little old hotel with an updated air about it. Staff are professional. Parking is inconvenient - about 300 meters away and $10 a day, but it is a good walking neighborhood. We parked the rental car and didn't use it for the two days we were there Good restaurants and patisseries nearby. We did not take breakfast at the hotel as we enjoyed exploring the wide range of regional pastries for which Portugal is famous.

Since I visited Coimbra for work, I didn't spend much time in the hotel, but I really got a good sleep- room was nice and beds very comfortable. WiFi signal was very strong and breakfast was really tasty. You can get some snacks from the bar, Stuff was helpful, and the location was very good- 10 min from the center itself, 5 min from the river. Would recommend!

I have previously written a glowing review of Hotel Oslo. This is a great, efficient, professionally staffed small hotel with a very good breakfast, a very nice bar area (open til 1AM, offering late night snacks) with delightful views, excellent housekeeping and truly nice people who are kind and gracious. We had a lovely stay in a beautiful city.

The location ais great, very central! As Coimbra is quite small is a perfect place to stay for a weekend. The studio was cleaned, and has basic thing in the kitchen so enough to cook few basic meals. Perfect for a weekend or a pitstop while travelling trough Portugal. Also, there was an AC in the studio which helped a lot.

Hotel Tivoli is more like a business hotel than a tourist hotel, but our room was quite large and comfortable. It is about a 10-15 minute walk to the center of Coimbra, and is located approximately mid-way between the Coimbra A and Coimbra B train stations. There's a good restaurant attached to the hotel.
