Essaouira has developed from a hippie hangout to become a top Morocco beach resort with good surfing conditions. Its 18th-century medina is almost European in feel and narrow streets lead under low arches past fragrant spice stalls and local artisans selling everything from wood carvings to faience pottery.
Dotted around the souk are many traditional-style riads on Booking.com, hidden behind tiled façades and blue doors. Other Essaouira accommodation options include luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap apartments, and B&Bs near Essaouira Airport.
Also bright blue are the rowing boats bobbing gently in small harbours sheltered by the Scala of the Port, a wide walkway with ramparts through which several historic cannons poke out. At the end is the Citadel, a small fortress overlooking Mogador Island - the largest of the Iles Purpuraires, so-called for the purple shells found in their rocks that were once used to produce dyes for Roman senator togas.
Another fortress – Bordj El Berod – lies in pieces on the long, sandy beach south of the marina. In the opposite direction the coastline is more rocky and lined by the Scala of the Kasbah, the crenellated walls protecting the medina. Horseriding and camel safaris are available on the beach and you can also visit a Berber village inland.
Good place with a chilled-out vibe. Great for those who are into surfing or wind sports. Also a cool place for those who like to try local food, shop at markets, or just meander through the narrow streets of a historic and vibrant town.
Accommodation is affordable, food is tasty, and the people are friendly. Also lots of activities such as surfing and camel/horse riding.
Easy to reach other towns and cities from the bus station.

There were lots of things I liked about Essaouira.
There were lots of things I liked about Essaouira. It is a coastal seaport with fresh fish brought in daily, so eating fish/seafood was a real delight. The town itself has many sections of medina/suq where all sorts of shopping opportunities, or just gazing around can be had. I did a cookery course which I enjoyed and found very informative, we learned to make a meat tagine, also a lentil dish, and had a visit to the spice market. I went with another hotel guest to a hammam which was a first for me. I enjoyed it all, thought it was perhaps a bit commercial, and disappointed a day or two later to discover I had acquired headlice. I have heard of this happening to others, so whilst dismayed to be in that state, I recognise that it is fairly common. No I would not go to a hammam again. The hassle of getting lice free outweighed for me the enjoyment. I do ,however, recommend the cookery course.

Essauira is a very charming town, with a completely different atmosphere than the busy Marrakesh.
The old town has a lot of personality, with it's white buildings which mix Moroccan and European style.
Plenty of good restaurants and places for eating, especially for fish and seafood.
The prices of pretty much everything are significantly better than in Marrakesh and the sellers are more laid-back so it´s a good place for shopping some souvenirs more quietly.
The main beach is very nice and it has good sports infrastructure on the promenade.
There are also some nice places for listening to live music and in general the whole town has a very artsy and chill vibe.

Essaouira is a magical place full of charm and character.
Essaouira is a magical place full of charm and character. The Medina is delightful and everyone is very friendly. No pressure to buy. Some lovely restaurants catering to all budgets. The beach offers an alternative perspective with smart American beach style restaurants at the far end catering to all tastes. Essaouira is where the old and new come together in harmony. It feels safe and welcoming.
The personal was very helpful and did everything for us. The hotel and room beautiful, great location and the terrace great with magnificent view over the beach. Leila was especially helpful. When we arrived two people in our group were sick and we were a bit chaotic but she helped us arrange for a doctor and the medication. The day of checking out the grandmother in our group was also sick and she could stay longer in her room with no additional cost until she was prepared to travel. We are thankful and can really recommend this hotel.
The owners of the Riad Nadia and Thierry are just amazing people. We had the best time in their beautiful hotel and felt exceptionally well cared for by them and their staff. Any questions or interests we had were immediately tended to and it was clear that their main interest is making the guests feel happy and comfortable.
The terrace up top is absolutely beautiful and every morning a gorgeous breakfast is served with fresh tea or coffee and eggs on pancakes, as well as fresh fruits and more. We would definitely come back!
It’s very beautiful and relaxing. Seems like there are many rooms but it wasn’t crowded or loud. There is parking right in front, the hotel is easy to find and it’s close to the beach. The breakfast was very tasty, although I wish they would start serving it earlier than 8:30. There is a beautiful rooftop terrace and swimming pool on the ground floor. We didn’t have time to check out their spa services unfortunately, maybe next time. The staff was very pleasant and helpful.
Premium Deluxe room was first class. ALL the staff were 100% professional and likeable. The hotel manager was excellent and attentive. He made sure he talked to us each day. We were in the hotel when the Earthquake happened (8th Sept 2023), and we were looked after and informed as much as possible. The hotel staff were caring even though they were worried about their own families, in Essaouira and in the Atlas Mountains.
I LOVED my 3-day stay!! The studio was so homey and comfortable. Best bed I slept into during my 4-week trip. Paolo is very caring, nice and personable. He prepared some complimentary goodies for me to enjoy - which is rare and such a nice touch as I hadn’t eaten all day and arrived late after a long drive. The studio is easy to access with parking nearby and a great location to explore Essaouira by feet.
The room looked absolutely amazing, it's so extremely beautiful. Also the staff was very helpful and friendly, you can decide where you want to eat your breakfast and you get an entire tray for yourself, rooms are cleaned daily. When you wanted to explore the city, the hotel is close to the city center and the beach and harbour, so you are there in no time. The stay was absolutely perfect.
The hotel recently opened, very luxury and beautiful Riad in the middle of Essaouria! From welcoming to leaving, I’ve been treated amazingly by Corinne and her crew. The breakfast was amazing, the bed very comfy and the staff super attentive. I would definitely recommend staying here, people should get to know this Riad in the middle of Essaouria.
Villa Beldi is a luxury retreat, while it isn’t overly authentic it is a beautiful hotel in a really nice setting. Perfect for relaxing with easy access to town via taxi or hire car etc. The main beach is only a short walk away too. The food is excellent, especially breakfast.
Riad is right situated within the Medina, easy to find and close to old markets. It's location is the best part as it's close to fish market, old city Square, Beach and Fort. Riad is spectacular. My rooms was free upgraded. And fresh breakfast was served with lots of options.
- it’s brand new so very clean and fresh
- loved the large window
- loved the location just inside Bab Marrakech
- staff are super friendly and helpful
- great breakfast
- easy walking to the beach and bus station
Perfect location, suite with ovean view was great, large and clean. The restaurant by the beach was very convenient. Excellent private beach right in front the hotel. Brakfast was also very good.
Fantastic visual experience. Tranquil grounds and a great pool. Philippe the owner and his staff were absolutely the best! This small gem of a hotel outshines all the rest in Essaouira.
Very nice hotel at the limit of the Medina. Close to the beach offered nice sunset.

We tried their restaurant which was excellent
Charming and authentic riad in the heart of Essaouira, with probably the best restaurant in town. We ended up booking dinner here two of our three nights.
