Lots of hiking around, great beaches, nice local restaurants, bars and coffee shops. Relatively good public transport to get around. Often cheaper to take taxi to get around than renting a car. In total we spent 4 weeks on the Azores and had a rental car for 4 days, this was one too much. Taxi is great for getting almost everywhere. Public transport is somehow good.

The town has some very interesting historical buildings, but it seems the economic turndown took a lot from its better days. Walking there at night was rather a Lovecraftian experience. It's safe, but it's just that there's not much to do there. But it's a small island and the town is right in its middle and it was very handy for the day trips visiting its different parts.

Ribeira Grande is a fantastic place to stay if you're visiting São Miguel. It is located more central than Ponta Delgada while being only a 15 minute car ride away from the airport, so it's the perfect place from which to explore the entire island. An added bonus is that it's right next to the best beaches in São Miguel: most beaches on the island are rocky, the only true sandy beaches are next to Ribeira Grande. We went surfing twice at Santa Bárbara beach, only 10 minutes away from where we stayed in Ribeira Grande. The city itself is fairly small but quaint and has everything you need, including a pretty large supermarket (Continente), some cafes and restaurants, stores, even a laundromat. The only downside is that for vegans/vegetarians it's pretty hard to eat out, but that is true for almost all of the island except a few places in Ponta Delgada.

Ribeira Grande is a great starting point for trips all around the island. It is located almost in the middle of island so everything is pretty nearby. On the other side it is relatively small city so it is not overcrowded. 15-20 minutes from airport.
The place was cozy and the host was gracious even though we forgot to ask for an extra bed earlier. The location was great being almost on the beach and lots of free parking around. We likes staying in this town riberia grande more so than ponte degada if I had to be honest. It had a bigger variety of food and felt more down to earth. It's right in the middle of many scenic viewpoints as well. The shower had nice water pressure and was quite delightful after some of our hikes. All in all, very happy to have stopped by here.
Very nice place, decorated with taste up to the little details. Great location, super friendly staff, comfortable beds. We were provided with welcome cookies, tea, coffee, bathrobe, even with beachtowels. .Upon arrival, we were given a local map and orientation about the place and then sights. Great kitchen, it has everything you need. It is well organized with separate spaces for each room, the same in the fridge There's laundry service in Ribeira Grande and in Ponten Delgada if you need to do laundry. :)
The property was beautiful and right outside of the main town of Ribeira Grande. We were in easy walking or driving distance of so many things to do - Santa Barbara beach, waterfall hikes, etc. The pool was unheated so we didn't get in much, but we did dip our toes. It was so nice to open up our doors in the morning to the wonderful view! The hosts also provided some cheese, bread, and jam which made for a nice breakfast the first morning.
The hotel is simply breathtaking. The whole set up is extremely peaceful, you’re stone away from the beach and can have nice view from the pool. The rooms are very clean, modern and functional. The restaurant is also really good, both the food and drinks were amazing quality. Finally, the staff is super friendly and helpful they will make sure you enjoy your stay and have everything that’s needed!
Very lovely place quite in the center of the island and in the old town of Ribeira Grande. It has it's own parking spots and the self check-in smooth, so you don't have to know exactly when you arrive to get the keys. The three houses are well designed, so you don't really see the others as you sit on your porch. In April, using the pool was bit cold for us, but the children didn't seem to mind.
This accommodation in super nice.
Well located, 5 min drive to Santa Barbara beach and Ribeira Grande.
Our tiny studio was very clean and well organized, with everything you need.
The host was super nice, he left us both welcome and farewell treats.
Very unique is the garden with different types of plants and aromas.
The hotel has a youthful atmosphere, friendly and smiling guests, responsive hosts. A beautiful red cat who tries to participate everywhere.
Close to the ocean, surfers' beach. In general, a quiet area, next to a pasture with horses.
Classic hotel breakfast - bread, eggs, jam, cheese, meat. Delicious coffee.
The location of Ribeira Grande is great as it is very central to the island.
The calmness of the house in the city Center but on a calm street and on top of the river!
Few minutes walk from everything, the beach, supermarkets, restaurants and half an hour drive to the stunning Lagoa do Fogo and Caldeira Velha!
Beautiful house with a garden, swimming pool and a big kitchen, nicely decorated and clean rooms, very helpful and friendly staff, easy check-in, excellent breakfast and brunch and they even lend us orange towels to go to the hotsprings! Best hotel we stayed in during in Sao Miguel:)
Close proximity to the ocean - stunning beach with wonderful sunset views just around the corner. The property itself is quite modern (guess it’s been built or renovated recently), so it’s nice and clean, although rooms might have been bigger. Overall good value for money.
It is a big, spacious apartment. WiFi is stable. It has a balcony but it’s very small and you can’t use it for sitting, unless you bring kitchen chairs outside. Not even a space for small table. A free parking nearby, but in Ribeira Grande most parking places are free.
Nice hotel with a stunning ocean view. Breakfasts were nice, same every day but enough things to choose from. Nice indoor and outdoor swimming pools. Room was simple but clean. Central location with good access to all island's sightseeing points.
This property is right in the heart of Ribeira Grande, and it is stunning! We loved that we were able to swing by the market and make our breakfasts back at the villa. This was a great central location for exploring the whole island.
Everything was perfect. Best place I stayed on the Azores. The host welcomed me and provided me with a map with his favorite places and restaurants marked. The bed was so comfortable. The place was clean and in a beautiful setting.
It has a very unique interior. The path down to the beach behind the property was very beautiful. The beach is something I didn’t see advertised but should be on the listing if not.
This hostel was exceptionally clean and the host was very friendly and welcoming! I enjoyed my stay in this well-located and spacious hotel. Recommended!
Very nice appartment in very center of Ribeira Grande. Perfect and helpful owners. Clean and well equipped appartment. Definitely recommend to stay here!
