Amazing mountains but hiking is not well established and they try to keep tourists to a couple of specific spots. I think some mountains are off limits due to military but with some modern and professional tourism development, the potential to unlock these impressive mountains and forests is amazing.
I loved being on the island and was hit hard by what I saw in the museum and historical prisons. Definitely worth checking out.
I would have to say that the beaches are average and if you're an explorer looking for isolated little bays etc., you'll find some beautiful places decorated with all sorts of plastic ranging in colour and age.
When i go there again - which I will in better weather - I will get out on the water and find places to go diving and island hopping.
A really nice place with lots of "potential" if developed properly. I'll be back as there is plenty to explore...

Very peaceful and quiet island with lovely beaches.
Very peaceful and quiet island with lovely beaches. The snorkeling was okay but as the ocean was quite rough we had to go to different islands than the ones recommended. Maybe the other islands would have been more impressive. Most of the restaurants were seafood with huge tanks full of live fish etc....not really our thing. We discovered Bar 200 and Ula Cafe. Both had great food and happy friendly staff.

Very small island, better rent a motorbike, but many small taxi,
Very good beach and seaside, no traffic. It's a good place to relax.
It's a very important place for Vietnamese people, for Vietnam History.
The museum and the prison must to be visited and Vo Thi Sau grave.

The main warning: do NOT use ferry boat to go there.
The main warning: do NOT use ferry boat to go there. It is 4-4.5 hours of vomiting for entire boat. 7/9 right next to me were vomiting. Sorry for starting from such a nasty details, but you should be aware of it :)
This island is very different from the rest of Vietnam, because comparing with the rest of Vietnam it is nearly empty :) And that's awesome! Road traffic is very low.
At the same time I had a feeling that entire island is targeting local customers, who came to visit prison, to respect memory of their relatives, who passed away there. Because of that, huge amount of shops are selling stuff for bringing it to tomb or church.
As a consequence of point above, it is very-very difficult to find non-local food. I would say 99% places offer only local food.
Another consequence is that noise from locals in night and early morning time (starting from 4-5 am when they wake up): karaoke, just shouting on the street, shouting behind your door in hotel, etc., etc.
Make sure you have earplugs, though they not always help.
I think the best you can do on this island is to rent motorbike and explore it yourself. There are quite some places with really amazing view! And not crowded. Again, it is unbelievable for Vietnam :) If you are in diving, most probably you can do it there as well.

The historical prison, the one thing we were looking forward to seeing on this island was closed. The beaches and nature trails are so beautiful, but the island seems a bit soul less. a few beach bars or restaurants that play live music would be so nice.

Great hotels with friendly and professional staff.
Great hotels with friendly and professional staff. Some of the best service in Vietnam. Incredible scenery. The water is crystal clear. Getting around the island was easy. Taxis were reasonably priced and driving around on a rented motorbike was fun. The highlight for me was visiting the grave of Vo Thi Sau at dusk. It was a very special experience. Also, do yourself a favor and go to the Beach House restaurant. Its run by talented people and I almost stayed an extra day just to eat there one more time. Finally, the helicopter ride back to Vung Tau was great. Well worth the money. No major complaints but there aren't too many accessible beaches on the island so I wish I had spent more time at Dam Trau Beach near the airport. I also wish I had prepared better for the nature walk in the national park. Next time, I'll bring my own snorkel gear and hiking shoes. Also, the island is full of dogs and a few noisy people which makes it hard to get a good night's sleep. Otherwise, it's well worth a visit. Unfortunately, the Vung Tau Ferry only runs once a week which makes it pretty useless, especially when their staff don't bother to update the schedule. I'm not sure what's going on there.
We loved this centrally located hotel, close to most eateries, the beach and the museums. The staff were all wonderful especially Kim and the reception and housekeeping staff. Our room was lovely, clean, spacious with everything you need for a comfortable stay. This is a top quality hotel with a rooftop pool and gym. It has an amazing cocktail bar Cloud 9 on the ground floor with a very skilled barman. We loved our stay in this very reasonable for the quality and amenities hotel. Would highly recommend.
Very nice hotel with very friendly staff (and good English!). Situation is pretty central, far from the sea front but walking distance to many nice places. The rooftop swimming pool was small but lovely, and breakfast was good.
The room was very comfortable, lots of equipment ! We stayed 4 days and we were feeling home there.
You can rent a motorbike (very good one actually, was the best I've rent in Vietnam on 30+ rents!) to easily tour around Con Dao, which is very safe (very low traffic).
The room was modern, spacious and the bed was comfortable. the pool is great and the staff were very helpful. the breakfast is good. we were upgraded to a pool room view, but this was a mixed blessing as a large number of guests (Vietnamese) would cavort loudly in the pool every morning at 6am, which to my mind is a bit early to be waking all the guests by shouting to each other in the pool. This would last from about 6am to 6:30am, then the pool area would be quiet again.
The staff was amazing and made my stay so so lovely! I arrived very early and they upgraded my room for free to accommodate me showing up at 8 am. I needed to move the next day but I went out for the day and they moved everything for me. They helped organize a scooter, and airport transportation very early in the morning. They even woke up at 4:30 am to make sure I was up to catch my flight. Such lovely people. You need to stay here if you visit Con Doa.
I had a fantastic stay at Uyen's House. the hotel is so lovingly decorated with lots of green plants, books and attention to detail. She is such a great, warm-hearted person and helped me with everything. There was also really delicious coffee and breakfast. The room was also very special and creatively decorated, so that I immediately felt at home. Uyen's House moves to another house. This will definitely be just as great! Best homestay on the island!!
I had a fantastic stay here. The host is exceptional. She managed to meet all my needs by using google translate and by using her daughter who speaks English. I felt very welcomed here and felt very comfortable throughout my stay. I loved the room which was very spacious, clean and very reasonably priced. The scooter hire was excellent which helped me to see the island. I was amazed by the beautiful islands of Con Dao. I am very glad to have visited.
The hotel is clean and cosy, the room we had was bigger than the other places we had in Vietnam. The owner was always smiling and trying to support us (and drove with me a couple of times in the city trying to find a place where to exchange money on Saturday as the bank is closed). She always gives us fruits or some other food. Totally recommend the place - the best value for money you will find on the island.
Great hotel and staff, large clean modern room, with smart TV,hot water clean towels ,soap etc all provided, rented very good scooter for 4 days, lots of restaurants near by,beach only across the road, the beach area infront of hotel has a nice returant and bar connected to another hotel but you can use anytime, would stay here again, good breakfast and good price
Meeting the cutest host and i was so amused to offered by upgrading to the cutest room with a little amount fees. Location is so convinience from the centre of the town. We will continue to support the Little Home whenever we have a chance going back to Con Dao. Since it was a religious trip for us, it was a pleasent experiment at the island.
The hotel owner is nice and kind. We came earlier than the check-in time, so he offered us another room for a short rest.
The hotel is well-located in the town center, within easy walking distance to the tourist pier.
Highly recommended for your stay in Con Dao.
Very relaxed place and Hotel. The owner is very nice and relaxed. He also helps with the Transfer and rents scooter. The hotel is perfectly locaded begween the Sea and the City. If you want to have a quite time, Con Dao and this place is the right.
Very helpful hotel staff even we did most of communication with translation app. Room was clean and spaceous. They organized moped rental and taxis when I needed. Would stay again. High recommendations if you plan to stay in the island.
Friendly & supportive staff who always help me from airport pick up with cheap price then to guide me nice location as well as motorbike renting
Center & convenient location to all island' s beaches & visiting place
The place is central located within walking distance of everything. The woman running the hotel also runs a market downstairs making it convenient to grab whatever you need. She is very nice and helpful.
Staff were so lovely to our children. The location is stunning, right on the quiet beach. Hire mopeds and you can explore the whole island. Food at the 200 bar was lively too. Some nice home comforts.
The location and views are unbelievable here. The pool and beach are beautiful. The motor bike rental was easy and a lovely way to see the island-a must do.
