It's a great view of city and village life. You do the loop and that some what sums up your trip.
I did hit the Mountain you take a boat under and I took the "Back road" by mistake and ended up driving 58km though Laos villages
Seriously the best part of the trip.
I got to see a side of Laos 99% Of tourist never will so def. something worth seeing if you find that back road, its not hard to see if you do the loop backwards from what hotels advise you.
the caves are great, Dragon cave is a SERIOUS hike, the first few caves just east of the town are barely 5 minute visits and are used for praying not so. much tourism.

Just place for change of scenery from Thailand on visa run.
Just place for change of scenery from Thailand on visa run. Very easy border crossing and for visa on arrival to Laos not crowded on day we crossed. Good for stay and travel to other parts of Laos mountain area which had vrey much nicer weather. If you are motorcycle rider starting point for Thakek loop. Laos people were very friendly.

Many beautiful and scenic spots to explore close to Thakhek.

The town has a very laid back atmosphere and is friendly and reasonably priced. There is a very special and spiritually important temple if one has an affinity for that.

The karst mountains near the town are very beautiful.
The karst mountains near the town are very beautiful. Traffic on route to Vietnam can be a bit intimidating. The smaller dirt roads into the mountains are the best. Worthwhile wearing a face mask and dustproof goggles as the dust raised by pickup trucks can be suffocating and visibility reduced to practically zero especially with a big truck travelling at speed on a dusty dirt back road.

Thakhek is the old town, every architectures I saw it is full of history. You should walk around in the morning it is very nice weather. And if you like to outside for adventures. There are many caves around. You can rent the motorbike to go there it is not too far. Two sides of the road to adventure you will see local people living. They are so nice and friendly.

Nice near the river.
Nice near the river. Good start point for Thakhek loop by motorscooter, which we only went halfway and then returned back on the route for second part. 570km in 4D/3N trip, on mainly good roads. Stayed at Sabbadai guesthouse on 1st & 3rd night, and near Konglor Cave 2nd night. Get to Konglor area before dark, as quite a lot of potholes. Roads generally very good.
Loved everything! I stayed here for two nights, before and after the Thakek loop. Most folks will be in the same boat. It was super clean and comfortable — nice beds and everything. Binh and everyone on staff was super helpful with everything you need before the loop. Bike rental, directions, where to stop, where to stay. They have a Google Maps list with where to go, and they want to make sure you feel comfortable for your trip. He even gave me a ride in the morning. I would definitely stay there again!
Stayed 2 nights to rest up before the loop. Owner speaks English and is fun to talk too. She is local so can point you in direction of all you will need for your trip. Can leave your bag and shower on return when waiting for bus to wherever....Naga snakes from nearby temple to the river are cool to follow down and watch the fishing ladies at sunset. Food along river is pretty good also.
My friend and I enjoyed our stay here before doing the Thakek loop and were able to leave our big backpacks at the hostel. The room was clean and comfortable, the beds as well. Bathrooms were nice & clean and there’s really nothing to complain about.
The owner is the sweetest, so friendly and helpful and has great recommendations!
Great hostel to start the thakhek loop from! Mr Noy was very helpful with renting the bike and giving me a map of the route with lots of details for great stops! He also helped me to book a bus ticket to Pakse and offered drop off at bus station and shower after the loop. Great stay, ຂອບໃຈ Mr Noy!
It was clean clean clean and updated everywhere. The best bed and pillows I’ve had in Laos. I didn’t want to leave. Gorgeous decor and furnishings with attention to detail. The owner was a beautiful woman and spoke delightful English. Also the free breakfast was lovely ❤️
Location and staff so friendly. rooms with refrigerator, A/C and comfortable beds. The hotel looked like a three stars European standard. The toiletries were so good. The breakfast is included and you can choose several options. Free water at reception
The bus was so late getting into town, I didn't arrive until just after 11pm. I had messaged the property to update them and it was no problem at all. So friendly, the room is basic but clean and does the job for one night before starting the loop.
Nice little spot to spend a couple nights in Thakhek. Mr Noy was super responsive and drove us to Green Climbers home on our last morning in town. Beds are comfortable and much larger than a standard twin size. Bathrooms were clean, no complaints.
+ cheap place to get your head down before and after the Thakhek loop
+ lovely hosts
+ cheap rooms which are decent enough for the price especially if you are only staying one night
+ communal water refill and tea/coffee station
We could check in at three o'clock in the night, which was great. The owner can also give very nice recommendations for things to do around Thakhek, and you can store your luggage there if you decide to do the motorbike loop.
Extremely comfortable bed with nice A/C and privacy curtains. The bathrooms were nice and clean as well. Comfortable lounge area and they'll store your big backpack for when you're gone on the loop for a small fee.
Nice hostel , good for socialising. The Laos lady working there was so nice & friendly. The owner does a meeting regarding thakhek loop every evening based on his experience & it really helps.
the hotel owner is amazing! stayed here for quite a while because of the thakthek loop. the rooms are clean, great way to meet traveler’s and again the owner is fantastic!!
- got a good room with view of the square
- spacious rooms
- staff friendly
