Sandakan is not a city brimming with character and charm.
Sandakan is not a city brimming with character and charm. It is OK and you can find a small number of nice enough places to eat and drink, if you set your mind to it. I would not want to have stayed there more than one day and I won’t be going back anytime soon.

We used Sandakan as the gateway to Turtle Island and the Kinabatangan River. We had lunch in a central hotel which was fine, not a lot for vegetarians but the service was good.
We could have spent a little longer there, it seems easy to get around.

Great little town, wouldn’t spend more than a day or two here unless you were using as a base to go and see the orangutans and rainforest discovery centre or island tours.
Great water front dinners. Shopping mall and grocery store close to water front. Nice vibe.

It’s my home town and I have lots of fond memories. Fresh seafood paradise and amazing mixed cuisine with traditional Chinese, Malaysian food and Indian dishes. Everything in the food market is super cheap and fresh.
The town centre is looking undeveloped and unloved.

Not much to do in the town or much to see and nowhere very nice places to eat/drink. Unfortunately it is quite run down so book a decent hotel to stay in and make the most of the experiences available in the area.

Beautiful place. Lots of nature.
Beautiful place. Lots of nature.
We visited the Borneo Sunbear conservation centre, The orang utan sanctuary, the Rainfoest Discovery Centre and the Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Centre.
All above were very interesting and nicely done. However, you do need a car to get about as distances are far from Sabah Hotel.
Ride-sharing app (Grabcar) is a good alternative.
Seafood is cheap, plentiful and yummy in the Chinese restaurants
Staff is nice, always smiling and asking if you need anything. But they are also shy and don't connect.
We rented a car from Avis in Sandakan airport (158 RM per day) and drove to the lodge. Any small car can reach the lodge. There are some pot holes in some places but overall not too bad at all. On the way back we stopped at Sepilok to watch the morning feeding. Contact Avis but Whatsapp as they don't confirm booking.com reservations in a timely matter, +60-17-861-9451.
My new favourite place on Earth! No words can explain how amazing this place is! Amazing location for exploring the rainforest and Sandakan. Luxury facilities, surrounded by nature. Lovely helpful staff (shout out to Ru!) and great food. Really stunning place! If you need a guide contact Safar 00 60 11 4048 5579 and ask reception for Azahar who’s driven us around Sandakan. Everyone’s taken a great care of us!
Nice relaxed atmosphere with friendly staff.
The pool area and tropical flora surroundings was a great welcome to Sabah on our arrival in Sandakan ahead of our trip deeper into the rainforest, we even met a large monitor lizard wandering around the pool area.
Rooms were large and comfortable.
Only a very short Grab ride down into Sandakan, but necessary given the heat and limited pavements.
Room : Our room have been upgraded to room with sea view. Super satisfied with the room view. Basic room amenities provided. Very reasonable price for what the room had offered.
Location : Very convenient location as the hotel just in front of Sandakan Market & at the back of Harbour Mall. Near to Waterfront Seafood Restaurant. All in walking distance, super convenient.
It was a great location. The facility was very clean. my room had a lot of the original cabinets and they were in very nice condition, very well maintained. The staff was very accommodating. And there was a nice convenience. Store right at the hotel. The ocean was 300 m away. I always felt safe highly recommend.
The location is perfect to explore the city. The beds and pillows are confortable. The man at reception is very nice and helpful.
This hotel could be perfect if a little cleaner. The curtains were absolutely disgusting. That's too bad because there is a lot of positive things
The room was really big with a nice view on city. Receptionist area is huge and open-air connected with beautiful tropical pool which makes you feel like in jungle. Stuff was friendly and helpfull. I would definately recommend this hotel.
Staff were so friendly and amazing. Food was delicious, the highlight though was seeing oranguatans and langurs in the forest walk behind the hotel. That was truly amazing and the staff helped us identify what we saw.
Hotel was near the airport, we needed to stay in an area near the airport and close to the Sepilok Sanctuary, it was perfect for a night and the restaurant across the street was also very nice and clean.
