Staff was wonderful. Extremely accommodating. They were able to meet us at the airport and the pier and lead us to the hotel. Which I recommend as the old town area of Lamu is a bit of a maze. The building has super authentic architecture and lots of outdoor areas to relax.

The hotel was great, hanging out by the pool was wonderful. Reminded me of the Road hotels in Morocco with the pool in the centre open with plants around.
The meals were all very tasty and portion sizes just right. The view from our balcony was informative and immersive to watch. Our room was kept spotless and netting around bed much appreciated, that being said we had only one mosquito bite between the two of us. Many people came by on the tour to take photos of the pool, I think the hotel was part of the tour of Old Town.
Shout out to Esther at the front desk, always friendly and took care of any needs we had.
Wifi was excellent.

The staff and manager of the house so helpful. Lots of advice and recommendations where to eat.

The house is a beautiful gem within old lamu town. The architecture is stunning, the rooms are freshened by fans and the pool is great to escape the day’s heat.
The house staff is incredibly helpful and Peter was a great caretaker. We would also warmly recommend arranging a tour of the old town and of shela, as well as a boat tour if one wishes, with Abu. Abu is knowledgeable and loves his job; he is a great storyteller and a great artist (ask to see his recycled art). Walking around Lamu with him and learning about this unique place from him was a wonderful experience.

Lamu is a mesmerizing town with a beautiful history. The people are very friendly and welcoming. For instance - the town can be like a labyrinth, which makes it a bit challenging sometimes to find spots - even with Google Maps. Either people ask you if you need help or you can ask them and they show you the way - many of them even walked us to the location. This experience was so wonderful - I would definitely come back again.

Great, quaint town.
Great, quaint town. The scent of the donkey excrement is off-putting but seeing them is sublime. Being a coastal town, there are many ‘captains’. I had my transport pre-organized with my accommodation so be weary of that and potential scams, as well as the impromptu tour guides. Touch water, take a sunset sail boat ride, and visit the beach, maybe even Shela. Locals were very nice and friendly, warm welcomes. Affordable restaurants as well, Sailor’s Joint for example. I stayed at Subira House.

A beautiful resort, with many amenities with a lot of details paid to the decor. Unfortunately, not the same attention was given to the 3 restaurants. Poor quality food with a limited selection except for a very nice breakfast buffet. Had confirmed a twin bedded room, but did not receive one. The beds are extremely firm as the mattress sits on a cement platform but does have a nicely hung mosquito net.
Easy access across the water to Lamu.

- The ocean activities are marvelous!
- The ocean activities are marvelous! Amazing experience, memories I will always treasure. Food was also nice, a lot of seafood. Very culturally rich too!
- The town is dirty, because of monkeys, people in Lamu seem to have gotten used to it, but for an outsider its not. In addition, they don't treat the donkeys right, so it's sad to see them suffering. Lamu is a small town, I wish they would think of other means of transport and at least for people just walking, donkeys should be forbidden. There was also a lot of trash on the street, even in monuments.

Lamu is quite a unique place which is different from the main land of Kenya. You can enjoy the historical environment, beautiful beaches, sun rise and sun set, relaxing on the boat/dhow. And Lamu people are very kind to visitors, I love it. Some activities in the sea may be affected by the tide. So, it's better to ask people in advance when you can do the activity you want to do.
I was about to not book this place because of mixed reviews, but I am very glad I did. We stayed for a week, it really exceeded our expectations! Caroline and her staff were amazing, the place was always thoroughly cleaned in the morning, same with the pool, and the food was surprisingly cheap and really really good. Same with breakfast, which was also varied; many hotels lack that. Our special requests were no problem and they have many nice, private spaces to relax. I absolutely recommend this place.
Beautiful boutique hotel with large spacious rooms done up in a gorgeous Swahili style and a massive common area, right in the heart of Lamu Old Town's narrow roads. Safari, Johnson and Abu are really great. Safari in particular went out of his way to help us make our stay amazing, such as finding us a dhow captain to organise a private dhow trip. I'd 100% recommend Andavelo House for your Lamu stay.
Wonderful stay in a heritage building in the heart of Shela, with local live going on around the accommodation. Phone and they will pick you up at the pier, as the place is quite hard to find ( I kept getting lost). Wonderful common areas to hang out, lovely breakfast in the mornings. The host was very helpful in arranging a doctor to come round when I needed (minor) medical care. Woud stay again.
Beyt Salam is a great house. It was a nice change from staying in Shela as we were right in Lamu. We liked the decoration, the amazing staff (got us a huge jug of water for our room, made us great breakfast, helped us organise a tour of the old town), and the beautiful rooftop.
We definitely recommend this place!
A very beautiful and charming swahili palace. Josh is very nice and helped with everything, even with things not concerning to the accomodation. The room was very big and I could use the Kitchen and the top terrace with very nice views. Best place in Lamu if you want to avoid the fancy resorts.
A unique and extremely cosy family-run hotel. We really enjoyed the tranquility, traditionally styled rooms, a nice pool area. Breakfast was the best during our whole trip in Kenya. The staff were always there to help us.
Highly recommended and we would be very happy to come back again.
Absolutely amazing place. Lots of nice pockets to sit and relax, the rooms and the whole hotel are beautiful, and Amani, who runs it, is lovely and incredibly helpful -- we were met at the airport even though we forgot to share our flight time! Could not recommend more.
One of the best locations we’ve stayed during our trip in Kenya. It has everything: beautiful rooms
and house (eye for detail), most welcoming staff, delicious breakfast, comfortable bed, it is close to restaurants and clean. We would definitely recommend to stay here!
Nice and helpful staff, good breakfast.
Located in the heart of the action in Lamu town right next to the fort.
We were the only customers so literally had the house for us which was great
Bathroom is private external nice Swahili architectural features throughout.
The architecture of the home is authentic Lamu style, which brings you back in to time to a bygone regal era. And Mr. Zion, the caretaker, took care of us like royalty. We had him prepare a veggie traditional dinner, which was definitely fit for a King!
Insanely good value!! Nice breakfast and both Arnold and Fred were very helpful and knowledgeable. I had a great time in Lamu thanks to these two! I’d definitely recommend anyone visiting Lamu to stay here.
Banana house is the perfect place to stay in Shela. It is a short distance from Peponi and a short boat ride or longer walk to Lamu itself. The hotel is well maintained and the service is great!
Staff were incredible, always on hand to help with organising boat trips, transfers down to Shela (nearby more touristy area at south of Lamu) and flexible for breakfast timings.
I loved everything about Tabassam House in Lamu. Very peaceful around the clock for sure! Safe, comfortable and warm environment. Cool hospitality from Mohamed.
Beautiful house in the heart of Lamu. The housekeeper was lovely and helped us with all our requests. Plenty of space to relax outside of the room as well.
