The location of the hotel is good; it is just a short walk to the center of the city. The room was "no frills", which I expect from the Ibis chain, but it was in good condition overall. The hotel staff was very nice and also very helpful.

Hotel Astoria, hotel in Coimbra

Set in a historic building that counts as one of Coimbra’s architectural landmarks, Hotel Astória overlooks the Mondego River in the historic Baixa district. It offers rooms with classic décor.

We spent two nights here and found the location perfect. It was so close to amazing restaurants, bars, cafes and shopping malls. The view to the river was beautiful and fun to watch activity on the streets. Reception staff were friendly and helpful, nothing seemed like too much trouble and we enjoyed the candy available there! The atmosphere and decor of this old hotel was like stepping back in time to a bygone era. We felt privileged to experience such a treasure of Coimbra. The lift was a highlight and we laughed every time we used it, watching ourselves sitting on the leather clad bench. Our room was huge with plenty of space and a small reception room upon entering with high ceilings.

FAQs about hotels in Coimbra

A Seat of Learning and Royalty

Portugal’s medieval capital, and a pioneer of fado music alongside its modern counterpart Lisbon, Coimbra is a vibrant university city with a good helping of historic sights.

The university is the country’s oldest and its attractive buildings cover a small hill overlooking the Mondego River. The institution has an excellent science museum, the ornate Joanina Library, and one of the world’s oldest botanical gardens which contributes to the lush landscape.

The midweek nightlife in the city’s bars and restaurants is popular with students, while shopping options range from the stores of the CoimbraShopping complex to smaller boutiques on cobbled streets in the historic Baixa district.

The medieval centre houses the museum of Coimbran sculptor Machado de Castro and the Old Cathedral, begun under the reign of the first Portuguese King, Afonso Henriques. He is buried in Santa Cruz Monastery, while the tomb of a later queen – Elizabeth of Aragon – is in the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova. She founded this hilltop convent to replace flood-prone Santa Clara-a-Velha below. Between them is Portugal dos Pequenitos where Portugal’s main monuments are reproduced in miniature.

Nearby is Quinta das Lágrimas, a 19th-century mansion that is now a luxury hotel on Booking.com. Also available are cheap hostels and guest houses near the 2 main train stations.

Coimbra is a great city to visit and use as base to explore other locations in central Portugal. Make sure you wear comfy shoes, the cobbles streets and walking is often up steep hills. The library is worth viewing at the university, but make sure you book in advance or get there early, as they have limited tickets and time slots. The parks are beautiful along the river and worth taking the time to visit. If adventuring out, highly recommend Obidos and the Buddha Eden garden, as well as Aveiro and Costa Nova.

Coimbra has a lot to offer travelers.

Coimbra has a lot to offer travelers. Centro (old part of town) is very lovely and has a lot to see. Many small interesting roads and pathways to walk around and see beautiful buildings, historical churchs, shops, cafes...Restaurants are reasonably priced and there is a variety of different cuisines to accommodate everyone. We stayed one night, but could have easily stayed another night.

Five-minute walk from Coimbra A train station; online pix meant we knew exactly which building to look for. This is a charming and old-fashioned hotel that antique-lovers should really enjoy; it's like being on the set of a 1920s or earlier movie, and has an old-fashioned wood-lined elevator, complete with folding bench. We loved the place, but ... The one perturbing thing was the lack of in-room Wifi, but there are lots of comfortable spaces to connect on the main floor. For a couple of vacation days, though, this was not a big deal.

Coimbra was an unexpected pleasure to visit.

Coimbra was an unexpected pleasure to visit. We had great accommodation in an accessible (by car) area, but removed from the every day bustle. Interesting old town, enjoyable music/fado offerings, good walks along the river and excellent food were all recommended by our helpful and knowledgable host. Had trouble finding parking at first (it's not well signed IMO),

Small hotel in the center of town. Hotel is in the lower part of town near the river; plenty of restaurants, stores and bars are nearby; and the historic university is about a 15-minute walk uphill. (Note: Hills are steep in Coimbra!) Hotel is family-owned, with pleasant owners. Bedroom and bathroom were clean, bed was comfortable, and daily housekeeping service was good. Bedroom had a small desk and chair, TV and wardrobe. WiFi service was acceptable. Price was reasonable, so the room was good value for money.

It is a whimsical hotel, designed like a palazzo in Venice. Staff is great, very helpful. Breakfast is delivered to your room. View from our room was magnificent, overlooking part of the city from a bird view point. Location is close by to Old University, which is a must see in Coimbra, on the top of the old town . Driving there is a lot of fun, particularly for north Americans. Narrow, steep, cobbled streets. Don't come with a big SUV, because you will have hard time to find a parking spot.

Breathtaking view of Coimbra form the room's window. Room furnished with stylistic care and taste, very cosy and clean. Very warm welcome and interesting talk about history of Portugal accompanied by glass of tawny porto. The landlady helped us to organise at the best our one - day stay in Coimbra. In the morning we could enjoy the king's breakfast, several types of bread and cheese, home made confiture, exelent tost. Parking at disposal. We will definitly come back.

One of my best stays in Portugal. Dreamy, palatial (had my own ballroom lol), spacious & private. With an exceptional breakfast and friendly hosts. And only two guest rooms in the entire property. And Coimbra is a beautiful, intriguing town which I preferred to over-touristed Porto. One of my Portugal picks on my 4 week trip. So book Alto Canto for the perfect stay! Obrigada ladies and all the best.

The owners and staff - Joao, Ana, Janet - were so helpful. They booked an amazing boat trip, gave us an orientation to Coimbra, and even gave us a ride when we needed it. The building is gorgeous - if a bit vertically challenging like most places in older parts of the cities of Portugal. They provided an amazing breakfast - try the pumpkin jam with the bread! - and port and drinks at night.

Location is very central in the Coimbra old town: handy to everything. Quiet at night. We also liked the "roof garden". The reception staff (at Hotel Oslo) and the young staff on-site at Entre Ruas (for cleaning and replacement of supplies) were extremely helpful. Overall, the apartment was spacious for three people, with two bedrooms and a big lounge/dining space.
