A goldmine of Greek and Roman heritage, Siracusa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Necropolis of Pantalica in hills to the north-west.
Siracusa itself has a necropolis within the amazing Neapolis archaeological park, which also houses Roman amphitheatre and altar remains, as well as one of the largest Greek theatres ever built. Legend has it that the site includes the tomb of Archimedes, who was born here.
The ancient Greeks founded the city (also known as Syracuse) and Cicero even considered it the greatest of all. Columns from that period were used to build the Baroque cathedral, and the Fountain of Arethusa dates to the same era. Both are within Ortygia, a walled peninsula jutting into the turquoise Mediterranean Sea. Also here are ruins of the Roman temple of Apollo, and at the tip of the peninsula is the 13th-century Maniace Castle.
The fabulous Siracusa Archaeological Museum houses relics from all these periods, and is located by the Catacombs of Saint John. Opposite them both is the modern conical spire of the Madonna delle Lacrime Sanctuary church.
Aside from all this history, Siracusa also has plenty of pavement cafes and restaurants, and lovely sandy beaches overlooked by luxury hotels, cheap B&Bs and holiday homes available on Booking.com.

Visiting the archeological park is very nice, I recommend going early in the morning (8.30AM) before big tourist groups start arriving.
Ortigia is also a great place to go: besides sightseeing objects, I particularly recommend via Cavour with lovely small artisan shops.
A Putia near Fontana di Diana seemed to be a small diner appreciated both by locals and tourists. Good food, reasonable prices, ok service.

Ortigia is amazing, so much great food, and lovely to walk around. There isn't more than a day's worth of sight-seeing on the island, plus the Archaeological sites in Siracusa, but it is an excellent home base for day trips around south-east Sicily. And perfect for a relaxing holiday - coffee and a pastry in front of the duomo, a walk around the island and a little shopping (mostly touristy stuff unfortunately), and a gelato looking out over the water on the promenade. Very friendly people, lovely architecture and history around every corner, fantastic restaurants, and even in February, SUN!

Siracusa is a lovely city with a lot of history.
Siracusa is a lovely city with a lot of history. The old part of the city on Ortigia island is full of beautiful old buildings and archaeological sites.
There are many good restaurants and bars and by and large it is relatively cheap.
We rented a car; there are many worthwhile places to visit within an hours drive, including Etna. In the summer a car is essential if you want to get to the many beaches in Sicily

What a great city for a 4 day stay.
What a great city for a 4 day stay. We loved Ortigia, the Archamides outdoor interactive museum, etc. We also ventured off to Taormina and Isola Bella for the most beautiful views. Much prefer this city to Palermo which was dirty and congested.

Nestled along the shores of the Ionian Sea, Syracuse...
Nestled along the shores of the Ionian Sea, Syracuse effortlessly captures the essence of ancient and modern Sicily. The heart of the city, Ortigia Island, is a labyrinth of charming alleyways, historic architecture, and vibrant markets. Strolling through the narrow streets reveals hidden gems like the Piazza del Duomo, adorned with the breathtaking Syracuse Cathedral and the Fountain of Arethusa, surrounded by tales from Greek mythology.
Syracuse boasts a rich history that unfolds in its archaeological sites. The Greek Theater, a testament to its ancient past, provides a stunning backdrop of the sea. The Ear of Dionysius, a limestone cave with exceptional acoustics, offers a glimpse into the city’s fascinating tales.
Very well located on a cute and quiet street, close to the main attractions and the beach. The apartment has everything you may need! Even delicious coffee and coffee machine was provided, and we found cold water in the fridge upon arrival! Wifi was very fast. Washing machine with detergent also present.
It is cozy and themed around Sicily.
We got locked out of the apartment on our last night around 10om, the host was very responsive and came out very fast treating with kindness and understanding!
Great stay for 2!
Absolutely loved the Portobello apartment. Even though it’s not located in the heart of Ortigia, it’s so convenient to walk in just a few minutes with the added convenience of free street parking or paid lot parking nearby. The apartment is spacious and clean and well equipped. I could’ve lived there for months. The WiFi is some of the fasted we’ve seen in Sicily, or anywhere for that matter. Shower was super hot, bed was super comfortable, and two TVs!
Breakfast was very good , very rich . The location was good , walking distance to Ortigia. The rooms are very well designed and comfortable. The hotel and rooms were very clean. During one week in Sicily this is the best hotel which we have accommodated compare to Palermo and Taormina hotels which were at similar price levels . The hotel has very good fish restaurant bu the sea and in the center. Strongly recommended.” Onda Blue and Onda blue by sea”
We started our 3 week trip around Sicily in Siracusa and wanted a day to completely chill out at the end just a short way out of the city and the Hotel Relax was perfect for us. They accommodated our early check in and the pool and solarium area was superb. The room and bed were comfortable and the WiFi worked very well for us. There were not too many food options close by but that didn't matter because the food in the hotel was very nice.
The property was located at a great spot at the entrance of Ortigia which made it easy to spot and hence park just next to it. The hospitality was excellent and Mauro was very helpful and willing to provide any guidance and information about Ortigia and Sicily in general. Also, the new website that they created provides the user a tone of information about Ortigia which we loved. Definitely staying here again next time we visit Ortigia.
This apartment was our best stay so far in Sicily, it beautiful, clean and comfortable.
the kitchen is fully equipped for making anything you'd like, and the area around is filled with restaurants.
Ortigia is just 5 minute walk away, perfect for exploring by foot.
From Siracusa we went on day trip with our car, it is easy to get in and out of the area, and we always found plenty of free parking spots right infront of the apartment.
Definitely one of my best experiences traveling in Sicily. The room was clean and the bed comfortable. A good sized bathroom with a good shower. Very nice and caring owner. I felt like I was visiting a friend, not a hotel. The owner was kind enough to share advice and help with places to eat and places to visit. Very good and easy communication! Thank you for making my stay in Syracuse so enjoyable.
We stayed at this amazing loft for 3 nights and loved it! The place is very central to all the attractions, a bit hidden, which is a big plus. Communication with the owner was brilliant, he really spoiled us. We would definitely book again! Siracusa is a beautiful city, a real pearl of Sicily. Thank you very much!!!!!
Ortigia is very beautiful island with limited access of cars. Plenty of restaurants on walking distance from the Fausto's place. It had everything even for a long term living. Cleanliness of the room was impressive comparing to the ones we had in Sicily comparing to our stays in Catania, Taormina and Palermo.
excellent location and beautiful private courtyard . we just regret staying only one night. Antonella, the very kind owner, pointed out some of the best restaurants of our stay in Sicily . our room had a living room( see picture) and a courtyard( see picture) on top of the bedroom. very spacious .
The staff was fabulous. They ensured we got to the hotel and a valet took our car to secure parking. They also called a reliable driver to take us into Syracuse proper to visit the archeological museum and site. They also checked on our progress and sent a tuk-tuk to bring us back to the hotel.
Beautiful hide-away at a pitoresque location literally by the sea, walking distance from the downtown (Ortigia). The staff makes you feel like family, the bed is super-comfy and the breakfast is a culinary experience. It was definitely a highlight of our 1-week-trip to Sicily.
Breakfasts were exceptional as well the hosts. The penthouse views were amazing and very close to Ortigia. And it was only a 5 minute walk to the cruise terminal which was my departure point from Sicily. I would certainly stay there again. Highly recommended .
Perfect location right in the center of Ortigia. Our room
was just gorgeous and spacious and the ambiance was impecable. Breakfast in the terrace was also lovely as well as the staff. This was our favorite place in our 2 week trip around Sicily.
The building is very charming and the facilities including the washing machine were super helpful after a long trip in Sicily. Lea and Luca are also super helpful and wonderful hosts. Will recommend this place to all my friends and family.
Excellent location if you’re planning on visiting both the archaeological park in Syracuse and the island of Ortigia. It’s about halfway in between so it’s only about a 10 to 15 minute walk to everything. Very comfortable rooms.
Centrally located. Close to a small sandy beach and close to many restaurants and gelaterias. Ortigia is the prettiest, cleanest part of Sicily that I’ve seen so far, 14 days in Sicily. Highly recommend Five Rooms.
Probably the best accommodation we had during our whole trip to Sicily. Very nice, spacious and modern apartment right in the middle of Ortigia. I would go there anytime again! And Andrea was amazing, too!
