The district (sestiere) of Castello is the largest and greenest district in Venice. In fact, in the northern area you can find the Gardens of the Biennale and the Island of Sant’Elena, with sport fields and the city stadium. This sestiere is particularly appreciated by the residents for its tranquility, even if it borders with the most famous district of San Marco and that of Cannaregio. Every year in Castello the Venice Biennale takes place, with its pavilions at the Giardini and the Arsenale. The main attractions are the Basilica of Saints John and Paul, the Arsenale, the Church of San Zaccaria and Viale Garibaldi, a famous street of shops and restaurants. Some curiosities: Castello is the most distant district from the mainland and is the only one not directly facing the Grand Canal.
