Located at the centre of Ortigia Island in the old Jewish area of Giudecca, Casa Sophia is a traditional Sicilian two-floor house with a sunny terrace overlooking the rooftops of Ortigia. Always related to art, this house was the home of a famous Sicilian painter at the beginning of last century, it was later inhabited by a restorer and nowadays is owned by a theatre director. Casa Sophia is recommended to guests looking for an original, exclusive and chaos-free environment. It is bright and located in a quaint alley, it consists of a large bedroom with a vaulted ceiling and a typical small balcony overlooking the alley, a living room with a large comfortable sofa bed, a bathroom and a kitchen with a dining area overlooking a courtyard. The flooring of the house dates back to the early 1900s. The terrace, perfect for lunches and dinners, is furnished with a table, some chairs and a sunshade. With all its facilities, Casa Sophia can accommodate up to 4 people

Neighborhood info

The apartment is located precisely in the previous Jewish neighborhood of ​​Ortigia known as Giudecca, which is one of the most historic sites of the island. In this location there are many sacred Christian buildings that were constructed above ruins of synagogues and underground dungeons. Many of the buildings in this location are characterized by mixed architectural styles: the Sicilian Baroque and the Hebrew Israelite styles, with elements that go back to the Medieval and Renaissance periods. These architectural styles are also demonstrated throughout the narrow alleys and winding streets that make up the Giudecca neighborhood. One of the most attractive places are the Jewish Baths that are located 20 meters below ground level. There you will discover purification basins, where fresh water still flows today. In the near vicinity you can savour some of the best foods the island has to offer with delicious typical Sicilian specialties.
