A goldmine of Greek and Roman heritage, Siracusa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Necropolis of Pantalica in hills to the north-west.
Siracusa itself has a necropolis within the amazing Neapolis archaeological park, which also houses Roman amphitheatre and altar remains, as well as one of the largest Greek theatres ever built. Legend has it that the site includes the tomb of Archimedes, who was born here.
The ancient Greeks founded the city (also known as Syracuse) and Cicero even considered it the greatest of all. Columns from that period were used to build the Baroque cathedral, and the Fountain of Arethusa dates to the same era. Both are within Ortygia, a walled peninsula jutting into the turquoise Mediterranean Sea. Also here are ruins of the Roman temple of Apollo, and at the tip of the peninsula is the 13th-century Maniace Castle.
The fabulous Siracusa Archaeological Museum houses relics from all these periods, and is located by the Catacombs of Saint John. Opposite them both is the modern conical spire of the Madonna delle Lacrime Sanctuary church.
Aside from all this history, Siracusa also has plenty of pavement cafes and restaurants, and lovely sandy beaches overlooked by luxury hotels, cheap B&Bs and holiday homes available on Booking.com.

Visiting the archeological park is very nice, I recommend going early in the morning (8.30AM) before big tourist groups start arriving.
Ortigia is also a great place to go: besides sightseeing objects, I particularly recommend via Cavour with lovely small artisan shops.
A Putia near Fontana di Diana seemed to be a small diner appreciated both by locals and tourists. Good food, reasonable prices, ok service.

Ortigia is amazing, so much great food, and lovely to walk around. There isn't more than a day's worth of sight-seeing on the island, plus the Archaeological sites in Siracusa, but it is an excellent home base for day trips around south-east Sicily. And perfect for a relaxing holiday - coffee and a pastry in front of the duomo, a walk around the island and a little shopping (mostly touristy stuff unfortunately), and a gelato looking out over the water on the promenade. Very friendly people, lovely architecture and history around every corner, fantastic restaurants, and even in February, SUN!

Siracusa is a lovely city with a lot of history.
Siracusa is a lovely city with a lot of history. The old part of the city on Ortigia island is full of beautiful old buildings and archaeological sites.
There are many good restaurants and bars and by and large it is relatively cheap.
We rented a car; there are many worthwhile places to visit within an hours drive, including Etna. In the summer a car is essential if you want to get to the many beaches in Sicily

What a great city for a 4 day stay.
What a great city for a 4 day stay. We loved Ortigia, the Archamides outdoor interactive museum, etc. We also ventured off to Taormina and Isola Bella for the most beautiful views. Much prefer this city to Palermo which was dirty and congested.

Nestled along the shores of the Ionian Sea, Syracuse...
Nestled along the shores of the Ionian Sea, Syracuse effortlessly captures the essence of ancient and modern Sicily. The heart of the city, Ortigia Island, is a labyrinth of charming alleyways, historic architecture, and vibrant markets. Strolling through the narrow streets reveals hidden gems like the Piazza del Duomo, adorned with the breathtaking Syracuse Cathedral and the Fountain of Arethusa, surrounded by tales from Greek mythology.
Syracuse boasts a rich history that unfolds in its archaeological sites. The Greek Theater, a testament to its ancient past, provides a stunning backdrop of the sea. The Ear of Dionysius, a limestone cave with exceptional acoustics, offers a glimpse into the city’s fascinating tales.
Sabina is the most amazing host--she met us and saved a parking spot right by the door of the apartment and also provided many ideas for activities both on Ortigia and in Syracuse. The apartment is very spacious and had everything we needed. Sabina was very, very generous in breakfast and snack items provided. The daily market is a couple of streets behind the apartment and it is easy to walk anywhere on Ortigia. Sabina provided fans as it was very hot when we visited. Lovely historic area!
Beautiful property with a lovely courtyard in the back, with free on-site parking. The rooms are clean, comfortable, and appointed with many antiques, and it’s in a great location that is just steps away from the main archeological attractions in Siracusa proper (Neapolis park, Museum Paolo Orsi, San Giovanni catacombs). Also, Sebiana is the nicest and most helpful host we’ve met on our trip to Sicily (and that’s saying a lot, as all of our hosts in Sicily have been amazing).
The hotel is well located in the center of Ortega. It's spotless clean, the bedroom + living room + shower both specious, elegantly decorated and super romantic. It's very clear someone invested a considerable sum in an interior designer and furniture, which was not our typical experience in Sicily and certainly at a reasonably priced hotel. We didn't issues with stall or water mentioned in one of the reviews. The bathroom/Showers were great.
This was our favourite accommodation in Sicily, based on the absolutely stunning location in Ortigia, with views out to the sea and to the street; also based on the cleanliness, size and beauty of the property itself. 2 bathrooms, washing machine and we cooked in the kitchen and then ate dinner on the small balcony, overlooking the sea, watching the sunset. Stunning. Enjoyed the bottle of red that was provided :)
Excellent location for a day visit to Ortigia with easy access parking nearby. We only stayed one night as part of a longer tour of Sicily but our host got in touch ahead of arrival and made check in/keys handling and directions super easy!
We didn't need the kitchen but it all looked spotless clean and well equipped.
All in all would recommend
Location is great to see Ortigia and enjoy local life in Syracuse. The apartment is equipped with everything you need, a basic kitchen, coffee machine, kettle, washer and clothes hanger out of the window. Spotless! Location is super convenient to the train station and what a fantastic, welcoming host. Thanks, Francesco.
near enough to visit ortigia but relaxing and away from me the city confusion, the bed in our room was perfect (the best in 8 places we stayed in Sicily). Osso the host´s dog completed our stay, very special dog and the breakfast is served under beautiful trees and with very good local products.
Perfect stay.
I can’t tell you how much we loved staying at Byssus Suites.
If you’re looking for a high end hotel in Syracuse: this is the place!
Great location / design / service.
Valentina was really the best host ever. Thank you so much.
This is one of the best hotels I’ve stayed at.
great style, everything you could need was provided. warm staff. it was like being at home, but in Ortigia! easy check in/great communication! loved the furnishings, plenty of space for our things. this was our favorite lodging in all of Sicily, including a posh hotel in Taormina!
Great place in a good location at Ortigia.
200 from the public parking.
Perfect apartment for 4 - 5 people.
With kitchen, balcony and air conditioning.
The owners are very nice, glad to assist.
More expensive than the other places we took in Sicily but it was worth it.
Great hotel, beautiful, amazing location with a parking lot right besides it. Very spaciousis room!!!
Amazing views of the marina and the sea, wonderful breakfast with the nicest personnel in Sicily.
The restaurant for dinner is lovely too and the food was delicious.
Amazing apartment, super clean and sunny!Barbara was always available and helpful for us,such a warm person! The location is great and very quiet neighbourhood! We enjoyed every bit of it!The city of Siracusa was exceptional our favourite place in Sicily!❤️🥰🥰 🇮🇹 🇬🇷
The loveliest and most special accommodations we had in our three weeks in Sicily. Eva went above and beyond, with her time, enthusiasm and expertise, in making our stay in Scicli exceptional. The property is magnificent, and a highlight of our trip.
This was our last stay after 2 weeks in sicily. My only regret is that we left it for last. The staff was extremely helpful, the room spotless and the location perfect. We didn't experience this level of comfort even in 5 star hotels.
Probably the best accommodation we had during our whole trip to Sicily. Very nice, spacious and modern apartment right in the middle of Ortigia. I would go there anytime again! And Andrea was amazing, too!
Location of this B&B and the parking lot (20€ per night) are prefect on a road trip through Sicily. Comfy beds, spacious bathroom and very clean. Breakfast on the terrace was marvelous and plentiful.
The bed for us was a bit low to the ground and a bit hard to get our of. The breakfast was a croissant and some coffee. Definelty the least of all places we stayed in Sicily.
