I'm Portuguese therefore I know all the country and to me Guimarães is, along with Porto, the most beautiful city in my country! It's historical centre is magnificent! The castle, the palace, Largo da Oliveira and the surrounding streets and historical buildings make us feel like we are in the middle ages! It's truly magical!

Historic Center is good with lots of restaurants and courtyards. The cable car to the top of the mountain is a must do. It is 7.5 euros return. Residents take a lot of pride in their city. Most of the tourists are Portueguese . Prices are less than in the Algarve. Appears to be great bus service, but everything within walking distance.

Guimarães is an acient town where Portugal originated.
Guimarães is an acient town where Portugal originated. It is quite small. It's enough for the Visitors who don't have any specific plans to spend 1 whole day to see all the most important historical sites in this city.

Some locals call it "The Heart of Portugal" because what became the country of Portugal began it's fight for liberation from Moorish Occupation here. The castle from then is still standing and is currently undergoing extensive renovation. The old city center is nicely preserved and is very walkable. Regional food is hearty and very tasty. While it is touristy, it is also a university city. Pretty lively with a good range of affordability in eating, staying, and shopping.

Guimaraes was a lovely historical town with a lot to see just walking around - historical churches, lots of restaurants and pretty sites. We went to Citania de Briterios (2,000 year old Celtic village) - a short drive away - and loved it. We could have spent longer here.

I only had two days in Guimarães, and I wish that I could have stayed for at least two more. I stayed in the historic centre, which has much to offer in terms of aimlessly wandering around and staring agog at the old buildings, visiting museums, churches, palaces, and castles, eating delicious food, and enjoying artisan shops. I also took the cable car to Mount Penha and spent a few hours exploring the caves and sites, which was not enough time to see everything. Pack a picnic and plan to spend at least three hours wandering around the top of the mountain, enjoying the breathtaking views of the city, exploring the caves and grottoes, and shining about all the people who have been on this mountain in the past 5000 years.
We stayed here for 4 nights. The apartment is very spacious and was perfect for our 1 year old to explore. Everything was super clean, and it felt like we were staying in a hotel, but with a really well equipped kitchen. We were provided with a cot and fresh sheets for our daughter and our own bed was very comfy. The terrace was a nice addition. Location was also perfect. Would definitely stay here again next time we're in Guimarães.
Hospitality taken to new levels. We were greeted in person by the owner with an amazing display of kindness, courtesy and generosity. The space and facilities newly renovated and well kept, the stocked fridge, and the beautiful garden, everything bears evidence of care and delivers a wholesome experience. I'll happily return on every trip to Guimaraes if I can.
Everything about Hotel Oliveira was perfect but what made it extra special were the owners Ernesto & Theresa who really made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived & the staff.... nothing was too much trouble. Guimaraes was our first stay in Portugal and we were lucky to have been introduced to it in such a warm & hospitable way. Will remember it always.
Stayed at this charming, historic apartment in a prime location in Guimaraes. The staff went above and beyond, offering exceptional assistance throughout our stay. Despite a temporary electricity outage, they promptly resolved the issue and even provided a complimentary night as compensation. Highly recommend for a memorable and accommodating experience!”
A very fine hotel. Everything speaks of comfort and class. The room designs are beautiful. Breakfast was superb. Rita at the front desk was more than helpful. Bedding was luxurious. All of this, not to mention the hotel being located in the best place possible for the historical city of Guimaraes. A big obrigada and obrigado from our group.
We were a group of four (2 couples) and we stayed for the weekend. The apartment was very comfortable, spacious and clean. The host Magda was very nice and gave us very nice tips of places to visit, eat and drink in Guimarães. The apartment is not in the old part of town, but it is within 5min of waling distance.
Stunning, 1 of a kind property...an old family estate, restored/remodeled into a hotel/B&B. Very high end, tasteful decor. Incredibly ample & delicious breakfast. Staff were extremely warm and friendly.
The extensive garden walking paths are full of whimsical surprises and beautiful old trees. Amazing spot!!!
It was very good value for money. A bit older hotel, but kept very well. Probably better than any modern hotel, as the room and the bathroom were both spacious and well organised. There was everything we needed plus the room service was great and the very good restaurant food surprisingly cheap.
This is a nice hotel in Guimaraes. Is located in the monastery and, at least in our case, were able to sleep in the rooms were the monks used to sleep in the past. The room was very nice, comfortable and quiet. The surroundings of the hotel are very nice and is a pleasure to walk them.
The hotel was in a wonderful location. staff helpful and courteous. The only issue was there was some type of flying insect that was in our room, particularly the bathroom that made us uncomfortable. The room was spacious and comfortable otherwise.
A gorgeous boutique hotel outside Guimarães. We loved the outdoor space next to the infinity edge pool. Breakfast was great and having cocktails after a long day of exploring was perfect. Wished we had stayed an extra night. 💜
An amazing, renovated historical property in Guimarães, PT owned by the professional tennis player João Sousa. It retains the historical flavor with very comfortable, modern amenities and cheeky tennis references throughout.
The hotel is right next to the train station, so easy to get to/from the station with a big luggage. Then in a 10 min walk we were in the city center.
The staff was super nice and helpful. The room is good and clean.
I loved our stay here! The hotel is so creative. If we didn’t have a prior commitment we would have stayed longer. The pools, restaurant, and room were all amazing; a special treat on our travels.
The place was impeccable!, extremely clean, quiet, nice area, nice people, easy access, everything I could ask for!.
